Govt. Polytechnic, Koderma was established by the Government of Bihar in 1958 under the Department of Science and Technology. Now, this Govt Poly Koderma institute is under Government Jharkhand, Ranchi. Koderma, better known as Jhumri Tilaiya, was once known as the world's largest MICA producer. This institute was created exclusively for mining technicians since 1958.

Govt. Polytechnic, Koderma is situated in Koderma Bazaar; 13 km. north from Koderma Railway Station and 1 km. north from Koderma collector ate on Patna-Ranchi Highway in Koderma district of Jharkhand. Koderma Railway Station is on the Grand Chord Line, well connected by all Trains throughout India. The nearest international airport is Gaya (100 km), and Patna (162 km) respectively and Ranchi airport is 160 km away. Koderma (Jhumri Tilaiya) is almost midway between Ranchi and Patna, being well connected by road and trains. The institute is about 30 km north of Tilaiya Dam.
