Latterly, Government Polytechnic, Kushalnagar was established in 1961 at Somawarpet, Coorg District of Karnataka. This is a co-educational institute located on a vast area of 37 acres which provides diploma courses in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electronics and Communication and Metallurgical Engineering disciplines. The institute has a total strength of 637 students and a faculty of 32 which cumulatively offer a favourable ambiance for technical training. At Government Polytechnic, Kushalnagar, there are five full times diploma courses where each course take three years: Automobile Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Civil Engineering.

It also has a variety of facilities that seek to improve the learning environment for the institute’s learners. The central unit of these facilities is equipped with the library containing more than 16700 books; among them, there are 15700 of the technical books and 100 of the general ones. The library also includes 9 newspapers and 3 magazines that will allow the students to have enough informational impact.  As for the practical education, the college has auto mobile engineering, civil, electrical, Electronics and mechanical engineering departmental laboratories. There are modern information and technology facilities in the campus to make the students IT competent and aware of the changes. In order to ensure the all round development of the students the institute has sports facilities also there is an auditorium which is used for holding events seminars etc. The college also provides hostels for both gender separate that is advantageous for students from different places to further their college education.

In total, Government Polytechnic, Kushalnagar provides five types of diploma courses, and all of them are full-time. These courses include major branches of engineering so that students are conversant with technical courses. Such diploma programs include Automobile Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering both for, Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Civil Engineering program. Each of the courses in this category is intended to take 3 years to complete and these courses offer students both the theory and the practicalities of their chosen disciplines.
