Government Polytechnic Narendra Nagar was founded in 1975 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. GP Narendra Nagar is presently completely funded by the Government of Uttarakhand. It is associated with the Uttarakhand Board of Technical Education, Roorkee (UBTER) and has the approval of the AICTE and the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI).

Government Polytechnic Narendra Nagar provides various diploma and postgraduate diploma courses in different disciplines. The admissions to diploma and PGDCA courses at Government Polytechnic Narendra Nagar are done based on the JEEP examination. Uttarakhand Board of Technical Education conducts the JEEP examination for admission to diploma courses in government and private polytechnics in the state of Uttarakhand. 

Government Polytechnic Narendra Nagar placement cell has conducted various industrial visits to train students for the industries. Candidates have secured packages up to Rs 500,000 per annum. The placement percentage for the Mechanical Engineering programme was nearly 82%.
