Government Polytechnic, Talwar was set up in year of 2008 This institute is affiliated college situated in Jaisinghpur, Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The institute is recognized by the all India Council for Technical Education AICT and is involved in offering diploma courses in engineering. Located in a 8.3 acres area, the polytechnic offers 217 number of seats for students and 9 members at the faculty side. As of now Government Polytechnic, Talwar has started only two diploma courses namely Automobile Engineering having approved intake 40 and Civil Engineering having approved intake 40. The management of the institute want to offer quality technical education to the students in the region.
The polytechnic provides many facilities to its students and each facility is in some way related to the improvement of the students. It provides separate hostels for boys and girls, as well as a home away from home for students who come from different regions of the country. The campus has well stocked library that acts as information centre for students and members of the university. Regarding, physical fitness and recreation, the school provides a sports facility to the students for the sporting events.
In addition to the academic quality, the institute also has a very good IT facility necessary to run the college with advanced technology. That is why laboratories corresponding to each department offer practical learning. Other facilities are a canteen, a hall for functions and lectures, a shop for stationery and a hostel for guests, as well as a guest house for the faculty and students’ families. In addition to the educational facilities there is also a health center containing a first aid on campus. Furthermore, the polytechnic owns student and staff transport facilities to enable easy access to the place.
Government Polytechnic, Talwar provides a total of two disciplines in diploma courses and both are a full time programme of three years. At the moment the institute does not have any part-time, online, certification and other types of programs. The total intake of approved courses is 80 and of which 40 each will be admitted to Diploma in Automobile Engineering and Diploma in Civil Engineering. Unfortunately the enrolment in the latest year as well as pass out students is not available but according to the current data total enrolment of the institute is 217 students.
Taking admission in the Government Polytechnic, Talwar is mainly centralised on the Polytechnic Admission Test instituted by the Himachal Pradesh Takniki Shiksha Board, Dharamshala. The admission to the various courses offered is done by the Directorate of Technical Education, H.P. Sundernagar through centralized counseling by merit obtained in PAT. Admission into the second year diploma courses in lateral entry is done based on merit of Lateral Entry Entrance Test (LEET) or 10+2 science results after serving LEET merit list.
The institute also has an Alumni Association , presided by Er. R.L. Sharma under the convenorship of Er. M. L. Modgil, the then Principal Government Polytechnic Talwar,. That is why the development of this association will be aimed at strengthening the cooperation between alumni and the institute to deal with the interests of the current and future generations of students.

Application Procedure
The application procedure for Government Polytechnic, Talwar has a couple of steps:
1. Apply for the Polytechnic Admission Test (PAT) organized by the Himachal Pradesh Takniki Shiksha Board, Dharamshala.
2. Complete the PAT application form, usually on the Himachal Pradesh Takniki Shiksha Board website.
3. Submit the application fee as mentioned in the PAT notice.
4. Appear for the PAT test on the given date (May 17, 2025 for the next session).
5. Once the results of the PAT are declared, the short-listed candidates shall attend centralized counseling organized by the Directorate of Technical Education, H.P. Sundernagar.
6. The candidate shall be required to choose his/her option of courses and institutions rank-wise in PAT at the counseling time.
7. If a seat in Government Polytechnic, Talwar is provisionally allotted to a candidate, then he/she should report to the institute for verification of documents and admission procedure.

Degree wise Admission Process
Diploma in Automobile Engineering: The program is taught on full-time basis with the duration of the courses being three years. The intake of the course is 40 students. Admission is on the basis of the candidate's performance in the PAT conducted by the Himachal Pradesh Takniki Shiksha Board. Selection procedure includes centralized counseling conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education, H.P. Sundernagar.
Diploma in Civil Engineering: Similar to the Automobile Engineering course, this is a three-year full-time diploma course with an approved student intake of 40. Admission is done in the same ratio, and the candidates must appear for the PAT and go through the process of centralized counseling.
For both of these courses, lateral entry is possible for the second year. This is on the LEET merit or 10+2 science on the basis of the exhaustion of the LEET merit list.
