IIHT Kannur was founded and registered in 1987 according to the Societies Registration Act, 1860, as the Handloom Training Institute (HTI) and later, the Institute of Handloom and Textile Technology (IHTT). IHTT is presently associated with the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, Kannur (IHTT-K), whose operations are under the State Govt's and IIHT's supervision. IIHT activities are conducted in the southern part of Kerala.
