Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, Kannur, one of the 10 IIHTs, is an autonomous body under the Department of Industries, Government of Kerala and is the state's nodal agency for imparting science and technology to the traditional handloom and textile industry.

The IIHT Kannur was established and registered in 1987 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, named as Handloom Training Institute (HTI) and later upgraded to the Institute of Handloom and Textile Technology (IHTT).

Now IHTT is affiliated with the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, Kannur (IHTT-K) which is functioning under the direction of the State Govt. and Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHTs), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India for Industrial Intervention in North Kerala. IIHT operations are run from Balaramapuram in southern Kerala.

Indian Institute of Handloom Technology Kannur offers a full-time diploma and undergraduate programme. IIHT Kannur Courses include a Diploma in Handloom and Textile Technology (DHTT), Clothing and Fashion Technology (CFT), Training in Value Addition Technique and Fashion Clothing (TVT & FC), Pattern Making and Garment Construction (PMGC), Computer Aided Fashion Designing (CAFD), and Computer Aided Textile Designing (CATD). Also, the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology Kannur courses include a Bachelor’s degree in Costume and Fashion Designing.

Indian Institute of Handloom Technology Kannur has a training and placement cell that assists students in preparing for a better future. IIHT Kannur provides support to diploma and undergraduate students through Career Counselling, Workshops, Training, and Internships.
