    About Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, Goa

    The Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB), was set up in 1980 as a specialised educational unit located at Bambolim, Goa. This affiliated college has the mission of promoting mental health education and services in this area. Covering an area of 68 .20 acres, IPHB has developed two types of postgraduate programmes and accepts 25 students in total. The institute's commitment to mental health is reflected in its specialised courses: M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work; Diploma in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing. 

    Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour has developed a number of amenities for learning procedures and student comfort. The institute also has a tertiary care Psychiatric Hospital which students training in quality psychiatric services. Among the faculties there are practical training as a part of a department laboratory and a rich library for research and studies. It has well-equipped cafeteria facility, sophisticated gymnasium and good IT support, making the student balanced. For instance, through IPHB the university offers hostels for male and female students, thus the comfort of the learners from the different regions is enhanced.

    The programmes offered in the institute are clearly structured to address existing gaps in the production of mental health specialists. At present IPHB has two full time post graduate programmes Out of these two courses IPU offers both the programmes. This course is conducted for 2 years but due to low fees some students take 3 years to complete the course and the total fees structure of M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work is ₹37,400 per year and Diploma in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing is ₹16,400 per year. They also show that the implementation of the curriculum under IPHB intends to develop skilled human resource in mental health. Information on graduation statistics is still scarce, but the institute’s concentrated work environment guarantees that all 25 students who entered the institute get professional training for their specific specialization.

    In order to enroll themselves into IPHB, the students have to clear an entrance examination that is conducted for the selection. These exams are conducted by the institute on certain dates to maintain a correct standard/competition in selection. The affiliation of the institute with the state government of Goa seems to provide a way in to various opportunities in the public health sector.
