The National Institute for the Research in Tuberculosis NIRT started in the year 1956 established at Chennai Tamil Nadu. Located at the No.1, Mayor Sathiyamoorthy Road, Chetpet, the affiliated college has been in dealing with tuberculosis for more than six decades. NIRT has the provision for offering seven doctoral programs with specializations in different medical sciences to give focus on research and education. Currently the institute has 47 dedicated members in faculties which offer a spiking academic structure for the potential researchers. Due to the institute’s concentration on Microbiology, Immunology and HIV/AIDS research, NIRT is ideally placed to address issues surrounding disease transmission, prevention, control and cure.
This research institution has a well equipped facility for undertaking its research and educational objectives as follows. The library of the institute contains more than 17,000 books and journals related to health sciences. It also preserves a culturally and linguistically diverse assortment of digital resources: CD-ROMs, photographs, and WHO publications. This successful library maintains an open digital entrance to e-journals and databases, allowing constant studying for students and teachers. NIRT has its laboratories as National Reference Laboratory for the Revised National TB Control Program (RNTCP) which provides technical assistance to ten states in India. IT facilities of the Institute also enrich the learning and researching session for the students and offer them appropriately modern facilities.
In fact, NIRT currently has a total of seven full length doctoral programs out of which all award the degree of Ph.D. These programmes are specialised subject areas such as Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Immunology, Clinical Biochemistry and Pharmacology, HIV/AIDS, Molecular Biology and Statistics. Both programs are planned to take six years of completion time for each so as to conduct extensive research and cover more grounds.
That is the reason why the admission requirements at NIRT are oriented to choose the most suitable candidates for development of doctor’s degree. Aspiring learners meet the initial requirements of the listed institution through their applications in most probably their transcripts, documents for research proposals, and recommendation letters. Candidates who get these shortlisted are then called for the final process, which is a face to face interview. This two-step process also provides NIRT with a mechanism for admitting students with good or excellent previous academic records but those students also must have research ability and good communication skills that will enable them to successfully complete the doctoral program at NIRT.
