The college has a physics laboratory exam that will be held during one of the lab periods near the end of the Year. This exam is used to assess each student's ability to make accurate measurements with typical physics lab instruments, analyze and interpret empirical data, apply fundamental physics principles, design simple experiments, evaluate results, analyze measurement errors, and communicate findings clearly and concisely. In completing the exercises in this hands-on exam, students are permitted to use their lab manual, notes, textbook, calculator, and any other resources (except other students). Since this is an individual lab exam, each student should make a concerted effort to master the experimental physics techniques in all of the lab experiments performed throughout the Year. Many of the lab instructors provide special their students prepare for the lab exam, and students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by attending the preparation session led by their TA or another instructor for the same lab course. This St. Xavier's College contains video demonstrations for several of the experiments done in the Introductory Organic Laboratory Course. It is designed to help students visualize the experimental techniques as they are getting ready for their lab work. You will benefit most from this multimedia guide if you are simultaneously watching the videos while writing down the procedure for your lab work. Remember that the video clips are provided to help you prepare for the real lab - they are not a substitute for doing hands-on work under supervision in the lab. The St. Xavier's College instrumentation and techniques in chemistry through multiple-week laboratory projects. Students get experience with the use of advanced instrumentation, and in interpreting and analyzing the experimental results. Topics may include structural characterization with X-ray crystallography; materials analysis with scanning probe microscopes; polymer synthesis and characterization; synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials; computational chemistry to perform theoretical ab initio calculations and computer modeling of biomolecules.
