Founded in the year 1965, Sundarban Mahavidyalaya is a co-educational college situated in the district of South 24 Parganas in the state of West Bengal. It is an affiliated college, duly recognised by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. The college campus is spread out over 5.195 acres and has attracted nearly 4,360 students, with a proper gender ratio of 59% female and 41% male students. 

The colleges are committed to providing a comprehensive learning environment equipped with modern facilities that shall foster the proper growth of the students both academically and personally. The campus has well-equipped laboratories for hands-on learning in the science disciplines, a library with relevant resources, and IT infrastructure to help students keep themselves updated in technological advancement. In this context, sports facilities and a gym are also available in college. Sundarban Mahavidyalaya offers a total of 16 courses under different streams in arts, science, and commerce at the undergraduate level. There are popular programmes in B.A. (Honours) in Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Economics, Geography, and Education; B.Sc. (Honours) in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics; and B.Com. with Accounting and Finance. 

Admission at Sundarban Mahavidyalaya is based on an inclusive and merit-based process. The college offers a number of undergraduate programmes, and admission to these is based on the student's aggregate performance during their last board examination.
