The Bharathidasan University (BDU) is located in the city of Tiruchirappalli, which is in Tamil Nadu. It was established in the year 1982. The sprawling campus is spread over a total area worth six- hundred and thirty- one acres of land. The BDU has been granted full university status, by the UGC (University Grants Commission). It has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results.
Nearly a hundred college are affiliated to this massive university. This affiliation extends to the districts of Karur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur and of course in Tiruchirappalli. Among the several affiliated colleges, exist both aided, as well as self- financing ones. Besides the district capitals, the colleges of the BDU are also present in the towns of Orathanadu, Inamkulathur, Lalgudi, Veppur, Aranthangi, Thiruthuraipoondi, Vedaranayam, Kumbakonam, Alathur, Musiri, Annamalai Nagar, Kulithalai, Thuraiyur, Adirampattinam, Mannargudi, Ariyalur, Jayankondam, Papanasam, Manjakkudi, Porayar, Mayiladuthurai, Puthunampatti and in Thiruppanandal. Besides, there is even an institute located in New Delhi, that is affiliated to the BDU.
That is the Indian Institute of Financial Planning (IIFP). Every possible course within the broad gamut of arts, science and commerce are covered by the various constituent colleges of the Tiruchirappalli- based Bharathidasan University. Several professional courses are also run by the BDU. The study options extend right from the UG level till the doctoral ones. Several vocational programmes have also been introduced, as part of the government’s skill training initiatives. The B. Voc. may thus be taken up for the areas of Information Technology, Accounting & Taxation and for Software Development & System Administration. Likewise, also on offer are several diploma programmes.
These are primarily meant for working professionals, or those unable to dedicate, full hours to academics. These diplomas are available at across the levels. The areas covered include Computer Applications, Computer Hardware, Quality Engineering, Education, Bioprocessing Technology, BPO Management, Catering Assistant, Fabrication Engineering, Fashion Technology, Factory Management, Front Office Management, Food Production, Gemmology, Insurance Management, Home Textiles, Journalism, Medical Lab Technology, Office Automation, Yoga, Salesmanship, Fitness Management, Environmental Genomics, Naturopathy and a lot more options. All this has helped the university leapfrog up the ranking platforms. The Careers 360 magazine has placed the BDU as the 93rd best in the country among universities.
It has done even better in the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework), where the BDU has been placed rank 60th in the same category of universities. Overall too, the BDU has secured, a handsome 86th rank. Research is another big part of this university. The faculty members and even some of the students have got their works published across respected forums and publications. Some have even written full- fledged books, or chapters/ parts within books. Many have had their papers read out at conferences and seminars. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
Admissions to most of the academic programmes is merit- based. However, for the management programmes, nationally or state- wise accepted entrance exams such as CAT (Common Admission Test), CMAT (Common Management Aptitude Test), MAT (Management Aptitude Test) and TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test) are also considered. For foreign students, the GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) holds sway. The Delhi- based IIFP considers the scores of the IPU CET (Indraprastha University Common Entrance Test). There is a thriving student life on campus. Several student clubs and societies exist to look after the co- curricular and extra- curricular needs of the students.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The university even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. A convenience store is also located within campus.
This university has also always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students of this college have been active participants in government schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the NCC (National Cadet Corps), as well as and international initiatives such as the YRC (Youth Red Cross). The Bharathidasan University also receives funding from government schemes such as the DST – PURSE (Department of Science and Technology- Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence) and the RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan).
