The Bishop Heber College (BHC) in Tiruchirappalli was founded in the year 1966. The origins though lay back long ago. The college is named after Reginald Heber, who was the Lord Bishop of Calcutta and visited the city of Tiruchirappalli. The Heber Memorial School was started off in 1864. This same was raised to the level of a college in 1873, but was merged with the Madras Christian College (MCC) in 1934. In 1966, the original college was revived from fresh. The BHC has a soulful college song as well. It is run by the Tiruchirappalli- Thanjavur Diocese, which is a part of the Church of South India. The BEC is affiliated to the Bharathidasan University, also based in Tiruchirappalli, in the state of Tamil Nadu.
Courses are available here at both the UG as well as the PG levels. At the undergrad level, BA programmes may be pursued in the areas of – Tamil, Economics, History and English. B. Com can be pursued with specialization in International Accounting, Professional Accounting and for Computer Applications. Another programme on offer is the BBA. A BCA is also available. For vocation courses, there is the B. Voc. in Information Technology and in Accounting & Taxation. BSc. courses are available for the most number of options. These are in the areas of- Environmental Sciences, Bioinformatics, Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science and in Actuarial Mathematics Science. Masters courses are available at the BHC in similarly good number of options. One of the unique programmes here is the five- year Integrated MSc. in Bioinformatics.
Several courses here are self- financed, while the others are aided programmed. The entire academics here is run by the respective departments, possessing expertise in its own field. Within the Department of Arts, there are courses on – Economics, English, Commerce, Social Work, Management Studies, Tamil and in History. The Department of Science in more numerous in terms of the courses offered. These are in the fields of – Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Mathematics, Information Technology, Environment Science, Actuarial Science, Computer Applications, Computer Science, Biotechnology & Bioinformatics and in Library & Information Science. In addition to these, programmes are imparted for the areas of Calligraphy, French, Hindi and Sanskrit.
Several diploma programmes and certifications may also be pursued from here at the BHC. Diploma programmes may here be pursued for French, Child Focused Community Development (DCFCD), Advanced Medical Lab Technology (DMLT) and in Bio Analytical Techniques (DBAT). There are PG Diploma courses here in – Bioinformatics, Counselling, Operations Research, Industrial Safety, Insurance & Risk Management, Advanced Scientific Interfacing and in Statistics & Software. Further, certifications may be completed here in areas such as Herbal Entrepreneurship, LATEX, Calligraphy, Solar Energy Technology, Communicative Skills in English, Food Production, Hindi, French, Tamil Journalism, Analytical Techniques in Chemistry and in Bakery & Confectionary. Some add- on programmes can also be pursued here, either by the existing students or by external ones. These may be done in several of the programmes already mentioned about.
Research is another key area here. Several of the departments are active in this regard. The Deanery of Research has been created to take this ahead. The Bishop Heber College is an active member in international academic and research collaboration. This is why the BHC has been so proactive in signing collaborative agreements. Such partners exist in the countries of USA, UK, France and Russia. The sole collaborator in Russia is the GORNO- Altasia State University, while the two from France are the Groupe ESC Rouen and the University of Burgundy. From the UK, there are three which are the – Wolverhampton University, Kingston University in London and the Liverpool Hope University. From the USA, there are- Concordia College in New York, the Davidson in North Carolina and the Appalachian State University also from North Carolina. The BHC is also a signatory to the American Transfer Program. This allows for lateral entry to US universities from Indian ones like the Bishop Herber College in Tamil Nadu.
The Bishop Herber College has been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council) with an overwhelming A grade. The college thus brings out an annual quality assurance report. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment.
