Having the best experience of my life

The campus is astonishing with high end infrastructure and greenery and The James Thomson Building adds visual treat to the beauty. The other architectural marvel, MG central library is considered to be one of the best in Asia.Sports facilities are top notch with the best of the coaches. The classrooms are of high standards and most of them are air conditioned. Labs are well maintained and equipped with modern apparatus and instruments. The 24 hour LAN connectivity with high speed internet and without any download limits is one of the love of every student's life here. You may miss WiFi facility in some of the hostels though. There are many co-curricular activity clubs for students. They are all supervised by a faculty adviser, who, at times might be a pain to deal with. Most of the clubs are pro active and keep on organizing workshops and events for the student. You will encounter extremely talented guys in almost all fields.I was like the Jack of all master of none.As part of my personal experience, In the first years we were made to compete each other to be a part of your desired group or club. I am somehow now a member of such a group which designs racing cars and to be true I had learnt and experienced a lot since then. Participating in competitions together was fun. IIT Roorkee is considered to have a strong academics with the best in class faculty.I had some of the excellent professors teaching me- Gender ratio? Well a typical IIT crowd - boys, boys and boys (ratio 10:1 lol) and another sad news 75% attendance is compulsory in academics without any relaxation under any circumstances.I personally hate going to classes early in the morning. So if you are a late night owl you gotta watch your attendance. Expect one thing for sure, 100% placements. High profile companies and MNC’s like Google, IBM, Microsoft, Barclays, TATA Steel, Siemens, and hundred such more come to the Roorkee campus during the placement season. IIT Roorkee has one of the largest and an excellent alumni network. I guarantee you that you may not find any college with alumni network as large and wide as IIT roorkee. Every place has its own pros and cons. Its your prospect how you deal with them.“At IIT Roorkee, you can meet quality of peers". In my personal opinion, there would be no regrets and you will have a great time if you get to get here. IITR is the best place to spend the most important 4 years of your life!!!

The college has a beautiful campus including stadiums, courts, tracks and a high speed LAN connection for every student. The faculty here is good and helpful. To enhance exposure to research, the college has a Tinkering Lab where every student is allowed to experiment on their own ..One of the best thing is the vast no. of Cultural and Technological groups for students which allow them to learn beyond academics according to their own choice.. But without Helpful, Friendly and Machao Seniors, nothing values much...!!

When I joined the hype train and chose IITR for completing my B.Tech group,I was not disappointed in the very least.Stating that the atmosphere here is 'competitive' would be an understatement.Every person associated with IITR is excited about their work and are actively engaged in serving the scientific and engineering community.Although the people here, have a busy daily life, they often find out time for social activites like clubs, handling groups and learning even more things! Surely living the dream, must mean this!

IIT Roorkee- A place to be

City: Roorkee I belong to Lucknow but still I don't find Roorkee as a boring place as such. Yes, at times you might be get a little annoyed by not having huge mall to go for shopping or hang-outs, but then you have almost all the brands available in the market, which is just next to the campus and a lot of new shops are opening almost each week. Places near by: You have a plenty of options for a short weekend vacations, Massoorie, Dhanolti, Rishikesh, Shimla, Delhi, Nainital, Jim Corbet, Devaprayag, Lansdowne are among popularly known weekend destinations. And you can also enjoy it better with a bike trip with some of your best friends. The Campus The campus is astonishing with James Thomson building (Main or Admin building) being an icing on the cake. Imagine living in a lush green environment with no pollution air, its just worth it. The college provides you with the best of sports facilities (Yes, the best. Believe me, I have been to other IITs for Inter-IIT.) and best of coaches. Recently, IITR just missed the Inter-IIT championship to IITK by merely half a point which is surely will be not missed the next year. Academics The place is IIT itself, so there shouldn't be any doubt on the quality of education this place provides. It has 21 academic departments covering engineering, applied sciences, humanities & social sciences, and management programmes, 3 academic centre, 1 centres of excellence, 4 academic service centres and 3 supporting units. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, presented the Charter in November 1949 elevating the erstwhile college to the First Engineering University of Independent India, which lead to establishment of IITKGP. Co-curricular There are many co-curricular activity clubs for students. They are all supervised by a faculty adviser, who, at times might be a pain to deal with. But again it's about you skills and lets you learn how to tackle your annoying bosses in future. Most of the clubs are pro active and keep on organizing workshops and events for the student. One such club is the Cinema Club, which actively premiers recent Bollywood/Hollywood movies, thus solving your problems about theater. History The Roorkee College was established in 1847 AD as the First Engineering College in the British Empire. The College was renamed as The Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. On the 21st September 2001, the University was declared an institute of national importance, by passing a bill in the parliament, changing its status from University of Roorkee to Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. Multi Activity Centre A new Multi Activity Centre has been opened in the campus for different activities. It has got auditoriums, OAT, Cinema Theater, Entertainment Block, Shops, Food Courts etc. So, you get a mall in campus itself, if not in the town. (Cinema Theater, Entertainment Block, Shops, Food Courts etc. are not presently available, but the space has been sanctioned, and we look forward to use them soon.) LAN I have seen may of my friends and mates posting about IITR providing the fastest LAN in all IITs. I don't know if its true or not, but a download speed or around 45 Mbps is sizzling fast. Also, all the hostels are now equiped with high speed LAN. Previously, only the newly made hostels (in 2008) had LAN, rest had poor WiFi connections. These WiFi connections were made way back in 2001, and had a decent speed considering that time. Politics Elections are held every year in the campus for the post ranging from wing senator, to college president. The format of elections have been changed, increasing the competition for candidates. You will get to taste the real politics during this time. And obviously, politics is dirty. 11 to 6 Restriction Their is a restriction on unmarried female students to rest in their hostels after 11 PM till 6 AM. It is because the campus entertains entrance of locals into the campus due to some documents signed at the establishment of institute (this is what we have known). It has been asked to girls, if the limit was further to be extended, and the majority denied. Due to this restriction, problem is faced during some campus event or festival, and you don't get to celebrate birthday with your friends from other hostels. Food Accepted. Food at IITR has not been very impressive. The first year hostel mess serves you with the worst food. But we also have very good messes like the Govind Bhawan mess. The campus has lately introduced non-veg diet in the mess. For which you have to buy coupon separately, and sit separately from the other vegetarian diet students. This becomes pretty awkward. Management Management of the campus it not the best you can find. But it is improving gradually. There is a way for things to get done inside the campus, equally lengthy as any other government office. But they are now making processes simpler at both ends. Again, you need to be smart and clever to get something new done in the campus. Conclusion Every place has its own pros and cons. Its your prospect how you deal with them. Me and all everyone I know at this campus is very proud to be a part of such a great Institute. In my personal opinion, there would be no regrets and you will have a great time if you get to get here. You will end up being a better human and having equally good friends
