The Bhavan’s Vivekananda College of Science, Humanities and Commerce (BVC) was established in the year 1993. It is located in the city of Secunderabad, right next to the state capital of Hyderabad. When established, Secunderabad was part of undivided Andhra Pradesh (AP), but now it is a part of Telangana. The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB) trust was behind the establishment of this college. The BVB itself was begun back in 1938, and runs a host of colleges, from across the academic disciplines. The Bhavan’s Vivekananda College of Science, Humanities and Commerce itself now covers a total land area of fifty acres. This campus also houses the Aurobindo Junior College and Bhavan’s Shri Ramakrishna Vidyalaya.
Some of the courses here are UGC (University Grants Commission) approved having, been affiliated to the Hyderabad- based Osmania University (OU). Others now have autonomous status, so ratified by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). In addition, the college has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. Legendary Olympian shooter Gagan Narang is an alumnus of this college.
Courses are run here at the BVC right from the UG till doctoral levels. At the undergrad level, the general BA is available where three subject areas are tackled, which are- Political Science, Economics and Mass Communication. The B. Com may also be pursued at Honors mode or the General one, plus also with Computers specialization. The BSc. may be taken up in either Life Sciences or Physical Science. The former has the divisions for Micro Biology, Genetics, Bio Chemistry, Bio Technology and for Chemistry. A combination of these disciplines may be chosen. For the BSc. in Physical Science, the course options are for Physics, Statistics, Electronics, Mathematics and Computer Science. Here too, the pursuers may choose from the bouquet of options.
At the UG level, there are also two professional course options for BBA and BCA. At the master’s stage, similarly there is the MBA. There is also an M. Com. An MSc. may be taken up for the areas of Computer Science, Bio Chemistry and in Micro Biology. Students may also go for doctoral programmes from the Secunderabad- based BVC. Research too plays a crucial part in the development of the students and the college alike. So, some newsletters are released from the college campus. They chronicle the major events happening on campus. These newsletters from the BVC are titled respectively as the V- Echo, Samvridhi and the Bhavan’s Bytes. The right instrumentation facilities are also made available at the BVC to ensure the smooth conduct of all such research activities.
Several collaborative partnerships and linkages have been signed been signed with the government and industry bodies. The BVC then conducts training workshops there or takes up consulting assignments on their behalf. Some of the key collaborators for such assignments and sessions includes the likes of- NSIC (National Small Industries’ Corporation), CII (Confederation of Indian Industries), EY, Carpe Diem, GMERF (Global Medical Education and Research Foundation), Indus Universal School, Cherlapally Industries Association, INSA (Indian National Science Academy), NASI (National Academy of Sciences, India) and the IISER (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research).
A number of the research projects have also gained funding from recognized national institutions or corporates. Some of those funding agencies have been the likes of- OU, SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India), NSE (National Stock Exchange), CFRD (Centre for Fisheries Research and Development), SEED, NSIC, HSBC, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, EY and Thomas Reuters. The faculty members at the BVC in Telangana have also been quite active when it comes to getting their works published on recognized platforms. Several of such research findings have got a place on UGC listed texts. This college has even undertaken some research assignments with the DST (Department of Science and Technology).
The campus has much to offer. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. PG accommodations, access to public transport, convenience stores and banking facilities with ATMs are all available just outside the college campus. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
