    • PhD proposals are first screened to assess their alignment with the advertised faculty specialisations and the availability of supervisors before candidates are shortlisted for the admission test and interview.

    • All eligible candidates, including those with a two-year M.Phil. degree or equivalent from an Indian institution, must appear for a written admission test. Only those who qualify in the test will be called for the interview.

    • Candidates who have qualified for national fellowships or tests such as UGC NET/CSIR-NET/SET/GATE/CEED/GPAT are exempted from the written test but must appear for the interview.

    • General category candidates must obtain at least 10 out of 20 marks in the written test to qualify for the interview. A relaxation of 5% marks is allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PwD/EWS categories, as per government rules.

    • The written test consists of two essay-type questions of equal weight. One question assesses knowledge of research methodology, and the other is discipline-specific. For Economics applicants, both questions emphasise mathematical economics.

    • Final selection also depends on the feasibility of conducting the proposed research at the Centre, the availability of a suitable supervisor, the strength of the research proposal, and the candidate’s understanding of conceptual and methodological issues in the discipline.
