PhD proposals are first screened to assess their alignment with the advertised faculty specialisations and the availability of supervisors before candidates are shortlisted for the admission test and interview.
All eligible candidates, including those with a two-year M.Phil. degree or equivalent from an Indian institution, must appear for a written admission test. Only those who qualify in the test will be called for the interview.
Candidates who have qualified for national fellowships or tests such as UGC NET/CSIR-NET/SET/GATE/CEED/GPAT are exempted from the written test but must appear for the interview.
General category candidates must obtain at least 10 out of 20 marks in the written test to qualify for the interview. A relaxation of 5% marks is allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PwD/EWS categories, as per government rules.
The written test consists of two essay-type questions of equal weight. One question assesses knowledge of research methodology, and the other is discipline-specific. For Economics applicants, both questions emphasise mathematical economics.
Visually challenged candidates may arrange for a scribe to assist them during the written admission test.
In the interview or viva voce, candidates are required to present and discuss their research interests and proposed area of study before the PhD Research Committee of the Centre.

Final selection also depends on the feasibility of conducting the proposed research at the Centre, the availability of a suitable supervisor, the strength of the research proposal, and the candidate’s understanding of conceptual and methodological issues in the discipline.
