The College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Mizoram, which was established in 1995, is a constituent college in Selesih, Aizawl. Situated in a campus size of 169 acres, this ‘first’ and ‘only’ specialised institute concerning veterinary education as well as animal husbandry thrives in the northeastern part of India. The college was found to provide 14 regular courses at three degree levels for a total headcount of 393 students. There are a total of 53 faculty members in this college and the college proudly follows a low student-teacher ratio that gives better opportunities to the students to get individual attention besides offering good quality education. The institution offers extensive courses in the fields of veterinary science education; some of the programs include B.V.Sc. and A.H. courses, M.V.Sc. specialisations, and PhDs.
Among the features, the college offers a list of facilities that are intended to enrich the learning process and to develop the practical experiences of learners. The facility also has well-equipped laboratories; there is a laboratory animal house to breed various important animals used in teaching and research. The college library is an information centre with over thirty-two thousand volumes of books, journals, and bulletins and subscriptions to 32 national and 14 international journals. It also has up-to-date facilities such as CD-ROM reference databases and reprographic facilities. The institution has invested on technology by putting up a computer laboratory that has 20 computers and power backed by a 10 KVA online UPS.
The College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry is providing a wide curriculum of courses at different levels of veterinary. At the undergraduate level, the college offers the B.V.Sc. and A.H. (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry) a full-time course of six years with an approved intake of seventy-seven students. Postgraduate programmes available are M.V.Sc. in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Livestock Production and Management, Animal Nutrition, Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Veterinary Biochemistry, and Animal Genetics and Breeding. For the higher research, the college also offers doctorate programmes in veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, animal nutrition, and veterinary microbiology.
