Dibrugarh University’s Department of Petroleum Technology was established in 1969 as a constituent college at Dibrugarh, Assam. This specific department provides postgraduate education in the area of petroleum technology for students who desire to carve a niche for themselves in the oil and gas sector. According to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) guidelines, the department has kept up the standard of technical education. The department also boasts a solid faculty of six members, which makes it easily possible to give each student individual attention and quality teaching.
The department currently enjoys the use of appropriate facilities for its academic programmes and research endeavours. There are modern, well-equipped laboratories on the campus that play a significant role in learning petroleum technology. They include a core preparation lab, a core analysis lab, a drilling lab, a petroleum geology lab, and an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) lab. These have realised practical training for students and research scholars as well as the ability to use machines in these industries. This department also has a functional library that provides various materials to enhance the students’ understanding in that field. Also, there is good information technology equipment that helps the college to provide students with updated software and online essential tools to conduct their course work and research work effectively. The college comes under the Department of Dibrugarh University.
As far as the academic programmes are concerned, the Department of Petroleum Technology offers two specialised programmes. The M.Tech in Petroleum Technology course is a full-time, two-year course with an enrolment capacity of eighteen candidates. The following course objectives have been developed to cater for the advanced knowledge and skills in different aspects of petroleum engineering. The full-time Ph.D. programme in Petroleum Technology is a six-year research programme affording students the opportunity of partaking in research in the frontiers of the discipline. These two programmes are designed to address the current needs of the petroleum sector and to produce students equipped to undertake demanding careers in this field.
Unlike other universities, the Department of Petroleum Technology uses merit to admit students for the programme through a highly competitive process. For admission to the M.Tech course, the candidates are preferred as follows: The candidates must have attempted the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). This is a national examination that tests the integration of knowledge in a range of subjects in engineering and science by undergraduate students.
