Government Arts College is a Government college situated at Salem, Tamilnadu which was founded in the year of 1879. This accredited co-educational college functions independently and is committed to Periyar University and functional under NAAC certification. Located in a 15.2 acre area, GAC Salem today provides as many as 73 different courses in 12 different programmes where as total number of students it conducts are 5763. As for the faculty, the college has 156 faculties The number of male students is 71%, and the number of female students is 29%. GAC Salem specialises in providing education in arts, science and commerce streams.

Government Arts College has facilities that will supplement the learning of the student that are enrolled on this college. It has 68,857 books; 67,607 being textbooks, while the rest are 1,250 reference books. Accommodation for the students is available in separate hostels for boys and girls both of which have a capacity of 125 students. A modern campus has been developed to ensure provision of appropriate IT support in facilitating learning. College goer may use the college’s sport amenities by engaging in sporting activities while a canteen is available to ensure that all the college goer’s meals are met. The college also includes event and seminar facility; auditorium and well-equipped laboratory for practical knowledge.

The programmes provided by the GAC Salem include the undergraduate, postgraduate and the research programmes. Currently, colleges offer 25 undergraduate programmes, 20 postgraduate programmes, 11 M.Phil programs, and 11 Ph.D. programmes for the students. Total headcount enrolment across all courses stands at 5,648 of which majority 83% of students are pursing their Undergraduate programmes while the remaining 17% are in post graduate programmes. The college boasts of its flexibility in offering programmes popular among students for instance; BA, B.Com, B.Sc, BBA, BCA, MA, M.Com, M.Sc, MCA, MBA among others.

The admission process of Government Arts College of Salem is totally based on merit and the Government of Tamil Nadu’s reservation policy is followed all over the state. For admission into the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes the admission is purely based on merit list but depends on the provisions of the rule of reservation. The college offers a number of courses and accepts admission normally in may-June fora year of operation from July-August. In case of M.Phil programmes universities possess their own entrance tests for preparing their own select list. Merit is also followed as criterion in the case of admission according to the Ph.D. courses.
