The Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya (HMV) is located in the city of Jalandhar in Punjab. This college was first established long back in 1927 in Lahore, the biggest city in the state of Punjab then. After the Partition of India, this college was relocated to its present location in 1948, immediately after independence. Mahatma Hansraj was behind the establishment of this college. He is known as a highly renowned educationist in his time. As a proponent of the Arya Samaj movement, he also established the Dayanand Anglo- Vedic (DAV) Schools System back in 1886, also in Lahore. The DAV College Managing Committee (DAVMC) looks after the administration here. It is one of the largest educational groups in the country, managing multiple outfits, across the spectrum.
The Jalandhar- based Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya has been approved by the UGC (University Grants Commission) as an autonomous university. It has also been designated as a “College of Excellence”. This girls’ only institution, covers a total area worth thirty acres of land. The NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council) in addition has accredited the HMV with an A grade rating. Its points tally within the process is the highest, all over the country in the women’s only category. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with.
Courses are available here at the HMV, both at the UG as well as PG levels. Both four- year and three- year programmes are available at the undergrad level. The four- year programmes are in the areas of B.D. (Bachelor of Design) and in B.F.A. (Bachelor of Fine Arts). The former may also be taken up with the specialization in Multimedia. These courses are run by the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. MA in Music Vocal and in Music Instrumental are also up for grabs here. The three- year programmes are on offer from across the departments. The entire academics here, is run by a cohort of six departments, each with expertise in its own area.
The largest is the Department of The Sciences. This offers B.Sc. courses in the areas of Bio Technology, Bio Informatics and in Computer Science. There are also some innovative BSc. programmes are on offer in areas such as the so- named Medical and Non- Medical. The BSc. Medical is primarily made up of the PCB specialization involving the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, while in the BSc. Non- Medical, Mathematics replaced Biology to make it a PCM combo. MSc. programmes may likewise be taken up in the areas of Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics and in Bio Informatics. The BCA course is handled by the Department of Computer Science. The same department also manages the B.Sc. in IT (Information Technology) and MSc. courses in Computer Science and in IT.
Another large division here at the HMV is the Department of Humanities. Here, some conventional B.A. subjects are offered in the areas of English, Economics, Psychology, Hindi and in Political Science. At the bachelor’s level, some vocational programmes are also offered by this department. These are in line with the skill development schemes in the state and the region. They may be pursued in the areas of- Cosmetology, Computer Application, Mass Communication & Video Production, Journalism & Mass Communication and for Fashion Designing & Garment Construction. Further, there is also the BPES (Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports) done from here. The Department of Commerce runs the BBA and B. Com courses at the UG level, and likewise the M. Com and the PGDBM (Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management) at the master’s stage.
The HMV has also paid a lot of importance to the broader social good. This is the reason that students studying here have participated in several central and state government schemes. Participation has been strong in schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the NCC (National Cadet Corps). Several certificate and diploma courses are also on offer here. These may be taken up by the enrolled students as add- on courses, or by some external ones as well. They are primarily meant for working professionals, seeking a skill upgrade. Here, they may be undertaken here for the areas of- Business Management, Cyber Law & Information Security, VTP, Counselling, Journalism & Media, Beauty & Wellness, Soft Skills, Verbal Ability, Personality Development, Tally, GST, Mutual Fund Investment and several more.
The alumni of this college also deserve special mention. Some prominent HMV- ites have been Sarla Grewal, Sunita Rani, Surbhi Jyoti and Nalini Priyadarshini. The HMV has also forged useful ties with industry partners. This helps in students gaining the practical exposure as external experts then visit the campus and share their real- world experiences. This, plus the certifications help the students become more employable. Some of these collaborators have been the likes of- FLIP, Reliance Money, NIIT, Sapphire, Walkwel Technology, PNB, UBI, Vision Beyond, Nimble Technocrats, Birla Sun Life Insurance, ICICI Securities, Beenu Rajput Films, Creative Black Country UK Photography Project and a few more. MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) has been another area where the university has done much work, establishing its own courses even.
