Institute of Distance Education was established in 1981 as a constituent of the University of Madras in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. All the programmes offered at Institute of Distance Education are approved by Distance Education Council (DEC). IDE has over 100 examination locations in this country and abroad. The institute is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) under grade ‘A’ level. It has been recognised by the UGC. The institute is a part of University of Madras, Chennai. 

IDE is offering 109 programmes in the distance mode at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The insinuate of distance education offers programmes such as B.Sc Psychology, BA Economics, B.Sc Mathematics, M.Sc Counselling Psychology, MA Economics, M.Sc Psychology, M.Sc Information Technology, MA Historical Studies, MBA Marketing Management, B.Com Computer Application, BA Criminology and Police Administration, M.Sc Mathematics, MA English, MBA System Management, BA Public Administration, Data Structures. Along with these, the IDE offers professional, diploma and certificate courses.

The admission to courses in MBA and MCA programmes will be given on the basis of an entrance exam conducted by IDE, University of Madras.
