About Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Shillong
IHM Shillong was established in 2001 as a pioneer Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition situated at Shillong. This affiliated college is placed in Mawkasiang, Mawdiangdiang, East Khasi Hills District of Shillong, Meghalaya and provides education in hospitality. Comprising of a campus area of 20 acres, IHM Shillong has a total student strength of 376 and the faculty strength is 13. The institute provides 3 courses under two programmes in the field of hospitality and hotel administration, bakery and confectionery, food production. IHMSM already pays much attention to the quality of its programmes, thus the college also contributes a lot to the development of new generation of hospitality industry in the region.
The facilities provided by Institute of Hotel Management Shillong include recreational facilities as well that make the students to cover all their needs in the college premises. The institute has different facilities for boys and girls hostels and are availed to students on first come first serve basis. To pupils are granted simple amenities such as a bed also known as cot, wardrobe, writing table, and chair respectively. The university occupies a modern library, which serves as a necessary source of the students’ learning. To cope up with the opportunities generated from Information Technology, the institute has excellent IT support system. Departmental laboratories present a rich practical experience important for the acquisition of skills within the hospitality industry. Culturally IAAF for comprehensive growth exercise facilities are on its compound. A cafeteria caters for the everyday meals’ requirements of the students and members of staff; There is a guest /Waiting room for the faciality visiting lecturers, students’ family members among others. It also has a health center to provide first aid for the persons since the institute has students, employees and their families.
Altogether, the institute has three full time programmes out of which one is B Squadron as a bachelors degree programme and the other two are Diploma programmes. This is a 3 years programme B.Sc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration and these two are two years programmes Diploma in Bakery and Confectionery and Diploma in Food Production. These courses offer the student with basically, the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are essential in the hospitality industry.
The intake at IHM Shillong is majorly through the National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Examination (NCHM JEE). This is a national level entrance examination that us the only ticket that the intending students can use to enter the B.Sc Hospitality and Hotel Administration.
