National Institute of Virology established in 1952 in Pune, Maharashtra, stands as a pioneering institution in the realm of virological research and training in India. Initially known as the Virus Research Centre (VRC), it was established under the collaborative efforts of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Rockefeller Foundation (RF), USA. 

National Institute of Virology Pune offers various courses in the field of virological disciplines. NIV Pune is affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Pune.  The courses offered include MSc Virology, Ph.D in (Biochemistry, Basic Medical Science, Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Zoology) and M.Phil in (Biotechnology and Basic Medical Science). For NIV Pune admission to these courses, candidates have to appear for the Online Entrance Examination (OEE) conducted by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). Candidates with CSIR-NET, ICMR-JRF, UGC-NET, DBT-JRF, or DST-Inspire fellowships are eligible to enrol for the Ph.D programme.

National Institute of Virology embraced advanced technologies, including Electron Microscopy, immunology and computational biology studies. It has developed high-throughput deep sequencing platforms to explore the molecular epidemiology of viruses circulating in India. The facilities available at NIV Pune are a separate hostel for boys and girls, a library, laboratories, sports, an auditorium, a cafeteria, wifi, guest rooms, medical facilities and an alumni association.
