Rajah Serfoji Government College (Autonomous) was founded in 1955 with a mission to offer the youth a quality higher education, with a nationalistic and moralistic spirit to help them overcome social and economic backwardness. And to equip them to meet the standards of academic knowledge and research at the national and international level. In 2004, the UGC awarded the college autonomy. Since that time, the institution has been creating the students' curriculum and syllabi in accordance with the requirements given by the UGC and the affiliated University. The college applied for NAAC accreditation in 2000 and was later reaccredited with an A grade in 2016 and a B++ grade in 2007. In its fourth cycle of reaccreditation, the college is currently. The RSG College Thanjavur has begun with just 16 undergraduate courses, 6 graduate courses, 9 M. Phil. programmes, and 19 Ph.D. programmes. 

RSG College facilities such as an auditorium, Photocopy facility, Virtual Labs, gym library, sports and others can be availed by the students. The RCG College Thanjavur admission is currently provided to 20 Ph. D. programmes in science and humanities, 14 PG programmes, 9 M. Phil. programmes, and 22 UG programmes. All UG and PG courses are provided through the Choice-Based Credit System.  RSG College Thanjavur scholarships can be availed on merit.
