Subbaiah Institute of Medical Sciences is a newly established college in the year 2012, located in Shimoga, Karnataka recognition by Medical Council of India. This affiliated college is recognised by the National Medical Commission, and it provides numerous medical courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Spread across 32 acres of learning SIMS has a total strength of students as 781 and faculty members as 274. The institute offers 21 programmes under three degree programmes of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Master of Medicine and Master of Surgery based on major specialities of General Medicine, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

SIMS will provide top quality facilities for its students. The campus has commenced with well furnished AC and non-AC hostels for boys and girls to meet out the accommodation facilities. Security and safety are valued and while the premises is under lock and key, there are guards who work round the clock. This institute also has a modern central library of area approximately 2400 sq meters air conditioned and having the seating capacity for 300 students. It contains books, text books, reference books, foreign journals and other information and education learning materials, and it has amenities such as scanners and photocopiers. In its physical category, SIMS provides a number of sports amenities such as a football field, basketball court, cricket ground, hockey ground, indoor facilities for badminton and hath tennis. The college also has a well equipped air conditioned gymnasium for students and staff, which is also functional seven days a week.

Medical courses comprise a broad spectrum of medical disciplines, in which the institute provides 21 programmes. MBBS is the flagship programme. The MBBS course has an intake capacity of two hundred seats and the other MD/MS courses are offered in disciplines like Anaesthesia, Paediatric, Medicine, Orthopaedics, etc. The institute’s total seats available through all its courses are at 781 which shows its dedication towards good medical education.

SZU uses entrance exam as the principal route to select students to join their institution, like most universities across the nation. For MBBS programme however, the students are accorded admission based on their results in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG). Likewise, for postgraduate programmes (MD/MS), students get admitted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Post Graduates, (NEET-PG). These examinations are standard and provide a competitive environment and encourages the best students to come and apply. The institute follows annual schedules and norms of admissions related to these national level exams.
