What is Endocrinology

Courses taught in Endocrinology entail study of the endocrine system, its diseases and specific secretions are known as hormones, integration of developmental events proliferation, growth and differentiation and the psychological activities of metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sleep, digestion, respiration, excretion, mood, stress, lactation, reproduction and sensory perception caused by hormones. Coursework also involves specialisations such as behavioural endocrinology and comparative endocrinology. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is a 5.5-year programme.Furthermore, doctors in training also get to become familiar with all the glands in the endocrine system secretes hormones directly into the blood instead of doing so into a duct system. They get to learn about the different functions of different hormones and also the various modes of action. You can pursue Doctor of Medicine in Endocrinology after finishing MBBS.

Eligibility Criteria

UG: Candidates must have passed 10+2 with at least 50% marks in aggregate with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as core subjects. Independent entrance tests for UG programme (MBBS) are conducted by various state, central and private universities.

PG: Candidates must hold a degree in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery along with a good score in entrance tests held for PG programme conducted by various state, central and private universities.

Scope of Endocrinology

  • Hospitals need Doctors capable of treating diabetes, the most common endocrine disorder. With hundreds of thousands of diabetics in India, it is common sense that endocrinologists will always be in demand to administer the right treatment.
  • Medical centres across India also need medical specialists, endocrinologists to be specific good at diagnosing thyroid disorders, pituitary disorders, adrenal disorders, male reproductive disorders, metabolic bone disorders, disorders of growth and puberty etc.
