There is no shortage when it comes to scope and opportunities for oncologists. Hospitals everywhere require oncologists who are qualified and can work with all kinds of cancer patients.
With the alarming rate at which cancer is growing and spreading, oncologists are even more necessary to help treat patients. So, there has been a branching out of oncology into specializations such Radiation, Paediatric and Gynecologic Oncology.
All these branches focus on different types and therapies of cancer. People also have the option of becoming research specialists and even oncology nurses, along with MRI Technicians, Radiology Technicians, Radiology Assistants and more.

Since the field of oncology is very vast, it has, over the years, branched out to treat and cure different types of cancers.
The various branches range from general oncology for all types of cancer, radiation oncology which would include specializing in the radiation treatment of cancer; Paediatric oncology, which includes dealing with and treating cancer in infants, kids and teens; and gynecologic oncology which deals with cancer that develops in the female reproductive system.
CAR T Cells and Vaccinations for Cancer: CAR T cells have already been used in treating and helping with blood cancers such as Leukemia and Lymphoma. But there are more developments which are going to test out genetic modifications with these cells, to eventually make them work in such a way that they could help treat solid cancers too. There is also an increase in the look-out for vaccinations, research regarding combining some two treatments to create the same.
Biomarkers: Biomarkers already exist in treatments. But to be effective on cancer and its various types, doctors are said to start combining different biomarkers to take into account the immunological functioning and the genetic identity of the present tumour, to help treat specific cancers.
Microbiomes: There is on-going research about how microbiomes can be manipulated to cure/treat cancer. This also creates various opportunities in this field.
Apart from these developments and areas of growth, one must also keep in mind that since there are always novel kinds of tumours appearing, and since cancer is spreading rapidly, there always are new opportunities in this field.

Like most other fields, this field requires high levels of both technical and specific, and general and soft skills.
Soft Skills that are usually required:
Communication Skills: This skill is a must in the field of oncology for 2 reasons- 1. If while treating a patient, the health/condition of that patient begins rapidly deteriorating or dropping, the doctor on call needs to be able to communicate with other attendings and people working with her/him, as to what needs to be done to help the condition.
Empathy: This is also an imperative soft skill as if an oncologist cannot empathize with a patient, s/he will not be able to talk to and treat the patient well enough, or even understand the mental state of the patient.
Compassion: Compassion is required in this field as breaking the news of cancer is very difficult, and to do so, the doctor needs to be able to talk compassionately and in a manner that shows people that s/he understands how difficult the situation is.
Emotional Resilience is also important as the doctor needs to be able to help her/his patient through this difficult time.
Technical skills required in Oncology field are (not all of them are required in all branches of this field):
Ability to do extensive and effective cancer research.
Ability to work with new technologies.
Knowledge of all therapies and treatments for cancer, and its types.
Surgery
Ability to create functioning treatment plans.
Since the courses among the requirements for admissions to Postgraduate level Oncology courses are Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, let’s talk about these first. They are undergraduate courses and are clubbed together because they are both basic requirements for getting into the medical field.
MBBS is usually 5 years and 6 months long, and it includes various internships at several different organizations. After this degree is complete, students can register as doctors and can work in the field with this qualification. But there is also always the choice of continuing studies and taking a step further into Post Graduation. Another requirement for Oncology is holding an MD in General Medicine. This is a Postgraduate course of 2-3 years. This course focuses on teaching how to diagnose, treat and prevent diseases.
This is an advanced field and students are taught through methods of the practical application of knowledge through internships, theory and experiments. The Post-Graduation degree of Oncology is a 1 to a 2-year course that teaches oncology and its types.

Hello aspirant,
The eligibility for pursuing an MSc (Master of Science) in Oncology can vary depending on the specific admission requirements of the university or institution offering the program. In most cases, an MSc in Oncology is a specialized program that focuses on cancer research, treatment, and related fields.
While a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (BSc MLT) can provide a strong foundation in healthcare and medical sciences, it may not be the most direct pathway to an MSc in Oncology. Typically, candidates who pursue MSc in Oncology have a background in fields like biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, medicine, or a related discipline.
To be eligible for an MSc in Oncology, you may need to meet specific prerequisites, which could include having a relevant undergraduate degree, coursework in certain science subjects, and potentially some prior experience or exposure to cancer-related research or healthcare.
Thank you
Hope it helps you
