The IMS Unison University (IUU) is located in the city of Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand state. Dehradun is considered one of India’s premier educational hubs. This privately- owned university started off in the year 2013. The IUU has been granted full university status, by the UGC (University Grants Commission). As the name suggests, the Unison Group has been behind the setting up of this university. Shri Naveen Agarwal, who was the Founder Chairperson of the Unison Group, also established the IUU. The Unison Educational Foundation, now runs a number of such educational ventures in both Dehradun, as well in Noida, which is part of the National Capital Region (NCR), adjoining New Delhi.
Besides the IUU, the Unison Educational Foundation also runs the Unison World School (UWS) and the DIT University in Dehradun. In Noida, it likewise runs the Design & Innovation Academy and the Institute of Management Studies (IMS). The IUU may broadly be divided in to five schools, each with expertise in its own area. One of them is the School of Law (SoL). As is mandated by law, its programmes are ratified by the BCI (Bar Council of India). It offers courses at both the undergrad as well as master’s levels. The UG programme may be pursued under the five- year mode. This is an integrated LLB plus programme, so may be pursued immediately after school.
The LLB of course is the standard degree offered to Common Law countries’ legal study graduates. This may be undertaken in combo with two options. One of them is the most common BA LLB. The other is the BBA LLB. The one with BBA was started due to the realization that students wanted a study theme which could combine the legal and business aspects. It even enables the smooth transition to a life of entrepreneurship or future MBA studies which many students opt for anyway. At the post grad level, there is the one- year LLM. At this level, the studies get more specialized.
During this programme, research is highly encouraged. For admissions to these programmes, the scores of nationally recognized entrance exams are counted. The CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) and the LSAT (Law School Admission Test) remain the key ones. The CLAT includes 200 objective type multiple choice questions to be answered within a maximum time limit of 120 minutes. These 200 questions are divided into Legal Aptitude and GK hogging half the total share with 50 questions each. English and Reasoning are worth 40 each while math which is quite elementary is worth 20. For every wrong answer, a fourth of negative marks gets deducted.
CLAT is also one of the few law entrances that were conducted on online mode, but has now reverted to the offline avatar. The LSAT does not have GK or math, but has extra rounds of reasoning. Another major school here is the one for Liberal Arts (SoLA). Here only UG level courses may be undertaken with a BA in the optional areas of Economics, English and in Psychology. Another is the SoMC (School of Mass Communication). It offers a BA and an MA in Journalism and Mass Communication. Yet another is the School of Hospitality Management (SoHM). The only course offered here is the under- grad stage BHM (Bachelor of Hotel Management).
The fifth one is the School of Management (SoM). Several options are available under the SoM. At the UG level, one can go for a BBA, BCA or a B. Com (H). There is the MBA for those opting to do a masters. Like the SoL, this too offers an integrated programme, combining the BBA and the MBA. Admissions to these courses is via any of the nationally recognized entrance exams such as CAT (Common Admission Test), MAT (Management Aptitude Test), or the CMAT (Common Management Aptitude Test). Doctoral programmes may be taken up at the SoM and the SoL only.
Research is another big part of this university. The faculty members and even some of the students have got their works published across respected forums and publications. Some have even written full- fledged books, or chapters/ parts within books. Many have had their papers read out at conferences and seminars. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes. There is a thriving student life on campus. The main cultural festival here is known as Lamhe.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The university even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. A convenience store is also located within campus.
