The BBK DAV College for Women in Amritsar was founded in the year 1967. It is operated by the DAV College Managing Committee which runs several educational institutes all over the country across educational levels. The UGC has even deemed the BBK DAV College for Women as a Model College in the area of vocational education, of which it runs several courses. The campus is worth thirteen acres of land in the state of Punjab. The college is affiliated to the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) also based in Amritsar. The vocational courses meanwhile are approved by the Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE) in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (MP).
Courses are available here at the BBK DAV College for Women in Amritsar, at both UG as well as PG levels. These courses are available from a wide spectrum of options. This includes courses from the arts, commerce and science streams as well as vocational programmes. The Commerce and Management programmes available at the UG level include the BBA, B. Com and the innovative B. Com Professional programme. Likewise, an M. Com is on offer at the PG level. For the Science candidates, innovative BSc. programmes are on offer in areas such as the so- named Medical, Non- Medical and Biotechnology areas. The BSc. Medical is primarily made up of the PCB specialization involving the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, while in the BSc. Non- Medical, Mathematics replaced Biology to make it a PCM combo. Further, there is a PG Diploma in the area of Bioinformatics. This is primarily meant for the working practitioners in the field.
Related to the science area, are some subjects closely concerned with Information Technology and Computers. For this a BCA programme is on offer, as are some BSc. programmes in the areas of Computer Science and in Information Technology. Likewise, an MSc. may be pursued here from the areas of Computer Science and in Internet Studies. A one- year PG Diploma may also be pursued in the field of Computer Applications. There are a number of programmes available for the Arts courses at both UG and PG levels. For UG, one can opt for a general programme in BA, plus also a specialized BA in English or a BSc. in Economics. Another option here is the BJMC (Bachelors in Journalism and Mass Communication). At the master’s level programmes may be pursued in the areas of – English, Fine Art, Commercial Art, Journalism & Mass Communication, Interior Design, Performing Arts, Theatre, Media Studies & Production, Fashion Designing & Merchandising and in Tourism. PG Diploma courses are also available in the areas of Tailoring & Dress Designing and for Air & Travel Services.
Several vocational subjects are also on offer here, for which this institute is quite well- known. These courses are available for the fields of – Fashion Designing & Garments Construction (FDGC), Travel & Tourism Management (TTM), Applied Art, Computer Applications, Gemmology & Jewellery Designing (GJD) and in Still Photography and Audio Production (SPAP). A unique innovation here are the four- year professional programmes at the UG levels. These are available at Bachelors programmes in the areas of Design, Fine Arts and in Multimedia. Further, certifications are available in several courses which can either be done in itself or as add- on to any of the other regular programmes being undertaken. These are in the areas of – French, Food Preservation, Cosmetology, Interior Decoration, Communication Skills in English, Computer Fundamentals & Internet Applications, Computer Graphics & Animation and for Office Management & Secretarial Practices. There is also one for Anchoring, Reporting and News Reading.
Several collaborative linkages have been forged by the BBK DAV College for Women, both nationally as well as abroad. One of the most important ones is with the World Council of Curriculum and Innovation (WCCI), which is a UN body headquartered at the Alliant University in San Diego, USA. Another is with Australia- based World Education Fellowship (WEF). A third is with the Kent County Council in the UK. The others are with the Rotary International, USEFI (US Education Foundation in India) and the FETCH (Financial Education Teaches Children Healthy).
The campus has much to offer. There is a hostel here for the girl students. Sports facilities are also well endowed, including a swimming pool. he gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The college even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes. All this and much more has helped it to be accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council) with an A grade rating.
