About Bishop Moore College, Mavelikara
The Bishop Moore College is located in the town of Mavelikkara in the Alappuzha district of Kerala. It was established in the year 1964. It is managed by the Madhya Kerala Diocese, which is part of the Church of South India. The college is named after Reverend Edward Alfred Livingstone Moore. He was an Anglican Bishop having served in Travancore and Cochin, as part of the Church Missionary Society. It is at present affiliated to the University of Kerala. The Bishop Moore College has been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council) with an A grade in it. The Centre for Nonlinear Studies was inaugurated here in the year 2000.
Courses are available here at both the UG as well as PG levels. The undergrad courses here began in the year 1968, prior to which it operated merely as a junior college. The master’s level programmes only began in 1982. At the UG level, programmes are available in arts, commerce and the sciences. The B.A programmes available here include in the areas of – Economics, English Language & Literature and the Malayalam Language & Literature. A combo of complimentary courses is available in the areas of Political Science, Sanskrit, History of Modern India and Kerala Culture. There are more options for the BSc. These are available in the areas of – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Zoology, Botany and Biotechnology. Complimentary courses are available here too, which can be chosen from the other specializations besides the one pursued. So, for example, a student of physics may opt for mathematics and chemistry as complimentary options while another of botany may go with zoology and chemistry, and likewise it continues.
The English language is compulsory in all the programmes along with a second language which could be either of Malayalam or Hindi. There are options for commerce students too. The B. Com programme can be pursued with an option of electives from either Computer Applications or Finance and Taxation. Likewise, at the master’s level, an MA may be pursued in English Language & Literature. Here, specializations could be opted in American Literature and European Drama. The two- year MSc. has as options Nuclear Physics, Analytical Chemistry and Biotechnology. In addition to all this, add- on courses may also be pursued. They may be pursued in addition to any of the above programmes, or even standalone by external students. These are options in Polymer Nanocomposites, Web Designing & Office Automation and in Network Engineering. The last one is a professional diploma and certified by Keltron. The first two meanwhile, are certified by the UGC (University Grants Commission).
The entire academics at the Bishop Moore College in Kerala is handled by a cohort of eleven departments, each having expertise in its own area. These are in the areas of- English, Chemistry, Hindi, Commerce, Physics, Zoology, Physical Education, Malayalam & Sanskrit, Mathematics & Statistics and in Botany & Biotechnology. There is also the Department of Economics, History and Political Science. Besides these academic departments, there is also the Library Department. Several conferences and seminars are also held periodically at the Bishop Moore College. Key topics explored in some of these includes areas such as Theoretical Physics, Advanced Materials & Biomolecules and on Inclusive Growth & Indian Economy, besides several others.
Research is another key area at the Bishop Moore College. A lot of these research programmes are being held in collaboration with major research bodies at the state or national level. Examples of these collaborating bodies includes the likes of – DST (Department of Science and Technology), UGC, CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) and the KSCSTE (Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment). A lot of the research generated gets published in the Bishop Moore College’s own publications. Several works have been published in the SCI (Scientific Citation Index) Journal. Placements is likewise picking up now. The Federal Bank conducted campus placements and selected few students from here. The alumni list is also quite impressive, with the network growing each year.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where outdoor sports may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor games. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The college even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. A convenience store is also located within campus. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
