The Chotanagpur Law College (C.N. Law College) was established in the year 1954. It was established in the city of Ranchi, which was then in Bihar, but is now the capital of the state of Jharkhand. The college is named after the Chhota- Nagpur plateau that covers much off the region where the city is located in. It is affiliated to the Ranchi University, thus approved by the UGC (University Grants Commission). The Chotanagpur Law College has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council) with a respectable B grade rating. The Careers 360 magazine has also placed a AA rating on the college, thanks to its reputation for focus towards academics and research. The law programmes are also approved by the BCI (Bar Council of India), which is mandatory for any legal education programme in the country. The total campus covers four acres of land.
At the Chotanagpur Law College, courses are available at both the undergrad as well as the master’s levels. The UG programme may be pursued under both the five- year as well as the three- year modes. The former may be pursued immediately after school, while for the latter, a minimum of graduation is needed. The five- year programme is an integrated BA plus LLB programme, but the latter is a standalone one. The LLB of course is the standard degree offered to Common Law countries’ legal study graduates. At the post grad level, the two- year duration LLM programme is offered here. At this level, the studies get more specialized. This is the programme where research is highly encouraged. Admissions to these programmes is via the LSAT- India test, which is also used by several other leading law colleges in the country.
The Chotanagpur Law College in Ranchi has always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students of the CN Law College have been active participants in government schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme). The college has also always strived to maintain strong relations with its vast alumni network. A lot of the ex- students from the Chotanagpur Law College are now well established in different spheres of life. To leverage this network, the CNLEX (CN Law College Ex Student Alumni Association) has been created. This cell proactively networks with ex- students, helping in placements as well in industry interaction.
The campus has much to offer. There is a sports field where outdoor sports may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. An important aspect of law college life is the moot court contests. For this a separate hall has been curated, replete with all real court room paraphernalia. This then resembles the closest to the real model. This makes academics more interesting and concepts easier to grasp. Bank facilities with ATM and convenience stores are located near the college. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
Several important activities take place on campus. A college journal is regularly published. A student driven newsletter is also printed periodically. National or regional level seminars are conducted. Moot Court contests are also held at both the intra- college as well as the inter- college levels. Sports events are held where competition is encouraged between the teams on fair terms.
