The Ethiraj College for Women (ECW) is one of the premier girls’ only college, located in the metropolis of Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu. It is also one of the oldest colleges, having been in existence since 1948, immediately after Independence. The campus is spread over nine acres of land right at the heart of the city. The college is now affiliated to the University of Madras, also located in the same city. It is one of the oldest universities in the country, having been established back in the year 1857. This affiliation, ensures the approval of the UGC (University Grants Commission).
The ECW has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. The Ethiraj College Trust is in charge of this college’s administration. The ECW has been named after V.L. Ethiraj, who was an eminent barrister from this region. The initial focus here, was on the arts and the sciences, as courses of study. But later on, commerce and other professional courses also got added.
At present, courses are on offer, here at the Chennai- based Ethiraj College for Women, right from the UG till doctoral levels. The B.A. is offered in the areas of English, Economics, History and in Travel & Tourism Management. There is also a unique course titled as the B.A. in English and Communication Skills. At the master’s level, the M.A. is offered for the areas of- Tamil, English, Economics, History, Business Economics, Journalism & Communication and in Human Rights & Duties Education. While commerce may be a relatively newer field introduced here, the ECW has already made a name for itself in it.
The B. Com and the M. Com may respectively be undertaken at the UG and master’s levels. These may even be taken up with the specializations in the areas of Corporate Secretary-ship, Bank Management, Accounting & Finance and in Banking & Insurance Management. Among the sciences, the BSc. may be availed for the areas of- Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Psychology, Visual Communication, Nutrition Food Service Management, Plant Biology & Plant Bio Technology, Micro Biology, Computer Application, Bio Chemistry, Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics and for Advanced Zoology. These are highly innovative programmes on offer. Similar programmes may also be taken up at the master’s level.
A lot of the courses mentioned here may be taken up under the self- supporting mode, while some are on offer under the aided programmes scheme. The Ethiraj College for Women also offers several certificate courses. These are meant for working professionals, seeking a skill upgrade, but not able to devote full working hours to any academic programme. Here, these are offered in most of the areas where the degree courses are also available in, though obviously in a truncated, shortened format. The Centre for Women Studies is a key research wing towards women’s development areas. In addition, doctoral programmes may also be undertaken, here at the ECW.
Another area of much importance to the institute is entrepreneurship. This is why the E- Cell has been an active forum here. It helps develop the budding entrepreneurs among the students for the institute. Experienced trainers and entrepreneurs are invited to campus to deliver guest lectures and interact with those who have such business models. The college has always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students of this college have been active participants in government schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme), YRC (Youth Red Cross), RRC (Red Ribbon Club) and the NCC (National Cadet Corps).
The Chennai- based Ethiraj College for Women has also been extremely proactive in singing up collaborative deals with industry bodies. This helps in students’ training, their placement, and to help make the curriculum more industry- oriented. The ECW is a signatory to the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) programme. This is a joint operation between the KCIG (Knowledge Capital Investment Group) and the Department of Archaeology, as part of the Government of Tamil Nadu. An MOU has also been inked with the Concordia College in New York, USA. Another MOU exists with the British Council for providing Business English Certificate.
The Ethiraj College for Women lords it when it comes to national level rankings. The NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework) has placed it as the 38th within the category of colleges, all India. A special mention must go out to the highly distinguished alumni from this college. Some of the most famous names to have studied here, include the likes of- Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Joshna Chinappa, Dipika Pallikal, Jayanthi Natarajan, Sujata Sridhar, Preetha Krishnan, Sriya Reddy, Shvetha Jaishankar, J Vijaya, Dhivya Suryadevara, Padma Subramanyam and several more.
