The IFET College of Engineering is located in the state of Tamil Nadu. IFET expands to the Indo- French Educational Trust, which manages this college, and was responsible for its set up. This society was set up to further improve the ties between the two countries, through educational collaboration. The town of Vilapuram in Tamil Nadu plays host to this college. This location is strategic, as the town lies almost equidistant to the two French enclaves in India of Puducherry and Karaikal, plus the state capital of Chennai. 1998 was the year of establishment of the IFET College of Engineering. The total campus is spread over thirty acres of land.
The Vilapuram- based IFET College of Engineering is affiliated to the Chennai- based Anna University. This affiliation ensures approval of the UGC (University Grants Commission). Further, the college has also been accredited by both the NBA (National Board of Accreditation) and the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council). It has earned a B grade rating in the latter. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. This college also belongs to a select list of colleges in India, which have been ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certified.
The technical courses here, have also been ratified by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). Courses are run, here at this college, at both the UG as well as PG levels. At the undergrad level, B.E. programmes are available with six main specializations. These are in the engineering areas of- Civil, Information Technology, Mechanical, Computer Science, Electronics & Communication and for Electrical & Electronics. At the master’s level, the courses get more technical. So, the M. E. programmes are available for the areas of- Computer Science & Engineering and in Applied Electronics. In addition, one can also go for an MBA from here.
Admissions to the various programmes at the UG level, is via the TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test) paper. The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores are considered for the M.E. level admissions. The TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission) is used, likewise for the MBA. The entire academics at the IFET College of Engineering is run by a cohort of eight departments, each with expertise in its own area. Six of these are in the areas where the undergrad engineering courses are offered in. Another one is for the MBA. The last one is the Department of Humanities and Basic Sciences. This one takes care of the fundamental sciences of physics, chemistry and mathematics, plus the language courses.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria.
The college even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. A convenience store is also located within campus. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes. All this has helped the college climb up the rankings across platforms. This college has even won the laurels for its high- quality, classical looking campus architecture.
