Indian Institute of Handloom Technology Varanasi was established in 1956 by the Government of India. IIHT Varanasi is an affiliated college and is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Previously, it was known as the Central Weaving Institute. In 1956, the institute was taken over by the All India Handloom Board. In 1976, the institute was renamed as Indian Institute of Handloom Technology.

IHT Varanasi offers undergraduate and diploma courses. The programmes offered at IIHT Varanasi are Diploma in Handloom and Textile Technology, Post Diploma Textile Processing. In 2021-22, the institute started B.Tech Handloom and Textile Technology, which is approved by AICTE, New Delhi and affiliated to Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow. Candidates must ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria set by the board. Admission to diploma courses is given on the basis of marks scored in the last qualifying examination, also for B.Tech admission, JEE Main is required based on merit. 

Indian Institute of Handloom Technology Varanasi provides a wide range of facilities to its students. These facilities include classrooms, library, labs, auditorium, cafeteria, common rooms, hostels for boys and girls, placement office and many more. The training and placement cell at IIHT Varanasi provides training and development skills to the students. The cell conducts seminars, industrial visits, mock tests, webinars, guest lectures and other activities for the students.
