A premier (deemed) university dedicated to education, training, research, and industrial collaboration in chemical engineering, chemical technology, applied chemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology, and biology, the Institute was founded on October 1, 1933 as the University Department of Chemical Technology (commonly known as UDCT) of the University of Bombay (now Mumbai), with the noble intention of expanding India's knowledge reserves in chemical science and technology. Aspirants are offered ICT Marathwada courses in M.E/M.Tech and Ph.D. ICT received an A++ CGPA of 3.77 out of 4 when the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) Committee visited in November 2017. ICT is recognised as one of the top 10 engineering schools in India and as the 19th best university in the nation. ICT Marathwada admission into the courses is done based on MHT-CET/JEE Paper I score and as per UGC Norms. It is ranked fourth among Pharmacy Institutes, according to recognition. ICT was placed 118 in the BRCS QS Universities rating for 2018 but is now ranked 115 across all BRICS in 2019. ICT Marathwada placements are given to the students based on eligibility norms. 

The University of Mumbai awarded some autonomy to the then-UDCT in 1985 as a result of the institution's increasing prestige over the years and the promotion of autonomy by the University Grants Commission (UGC). ICT Marathwada facilities include hostels, library, IT infrastructure and many others. Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, as well as esteemed government officials, educators, business titans, and individuals. ICT Marathwada scholarships can be availed by all the students belonging to reserved categories. The Institute and IIT Kharagpur have inked an MOU to work together on a variety of research projects.
