The Maratha Mandal’s Nathajirao G Halgekar Institute of Dental Sciences and Research Centre, also known as MMDC Belgaum is a reputed dental college in Karnataka and was set up in 1992 at Belgaum. This affiliated college which enjoys the endorsement of the Dental Council of India (DCI) has several dental programmes, all situated on this 2.98 acre piece of land. A total of 245 students are admitted at MMDC Belgaum and the college has a faculty of 95 dedicated professionals. 10 nationally recognised courses are available at the institute as part of 3 degrees where the college focusing on different fields of dentistry. The student body is diverse, with a 74:26 per cent students from within the state and 74 per cent students from outside the state and a 1:3 ratio between males and females.

Maratha Mandal’s Nathajirao G Halgekar Institute Belgaum has several of the latest amenities to facilitate its academic activities. It has also ensured the students get decent hostel facilities and the institute has separately managed hostels for boys and girls. There is a health centre on campus and it is fully stocked with all the first aid requirement. Library is the important centre and resource of our college and contains more than 3,158 reference books/text books, 53 national/international journals subscribes. Both the digital library and Helinet facility provide the students with the access to online databases and e-journals and e-books. Concerning Extra curricula activities, the college holds several indoor and outdoor sports activities each year. Now the campus has good IT facilities, canteen for the staff and students, highly developed high seceded auditorium with a capacity of two hundred and fifty consist of ultramodern digital sound and lighting systems.

This institute is a centre for offering dental certification and has undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The traditional undergraduate programme offered is Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) for a total of fifty students. At the postgraduate level, MMDC Belgaum offers following masters degree specialisations in dental surgery: Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics Periodontology Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology Pediatrics and Preventive Dentistry Oral Medicine and Radiology. Also, the institute offers an M.Sc. in Biomedical Science courses besides having part-time M.Sc. programmes. All courses are full time with BDS programme being 5 years and all MDS programmes being of 3 years span. For the recent academic year, the enrolment figures of the institute were as follows with a total strength of 232 students.

MMDC Belgaum reserves admission strictly on the basis of merit and the admission to the college is offered through the centralised counselling of admissions conducted by the Government of Karnataka only. Even for the BDS programme , the candidates must have cleared Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English each and must have secured least 50 percent in PCB aggregate marks (40 % for SC/ST/OBC). The BDS and MDS courses options are offered based on the scores obtained in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG and MDS respectively). 5 In order to ensure the merit as well as the national standard these national level entrance examinations are accepted by the institute. 

MMDC Belgaum also provides scholarships, it was observed that 59 UG students out of 175 recipients and 8 Pg students out of 57 students were reimbursed in the 2022 academic year. Even though it is impossible to provide certain information about former alumni, the fact that Institute of Dentistry has been operating for more than a hundred years testifies that the institute has been producing successful specialists in the sphere of dental education.
