Metca Institute of Teacher Education, Palayamkunnu, was started during the academic year 2007-08 affiliated with the University of Kerala and is located at Varkala, Tiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The institute, which is located on a sprawling 5-acre campus, is recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). It has a B.Ed. programme with a total admission capacity of 96 and a total number of faculty members of eight. The institute for teachers is co-educational, and it has an ideal setup with regard to the kind of society it offers for teachers and would-be teachers; the institute majors in education with special emphasis on quality education for teachers.

The institute thus has a voucher of facilities that are aimed at improving the learning environment of its students. Modern IT facilities provide students with more knowledge about technological development in the sphere of learning, and information focuses in terms of resources are represented by well-equipped libraries. There are practical lessons as laboratories and rooms for events such as seminars and formal presentations through an auditorium. In order to support and encourage the overall development of the students in all aspects, the institute provides for sports and a gym. Medical requirements are met through a health centre with first aid provisions. It also has separate hostels for the boys and girls, necessary for comfortable living on the territory of the campus. Facilities provided include a cafeteria for the students and staff with regard to their diets, and there is adequate space for cars for everybody.

While the Metca Institute of Teacher Education has only one course, the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.). This full-time course spread over two academic years has an approved strength of one hundred students, popularly called'seats’. The curriculum of the B.Ed. programme will help students to positively embark on a wonderful teaching profession and enhance understanding of the course. That fact that the institute is concentrating solely on this particular programme enables it to devote adequate time and effort to the preparation of professional teachers.

At Metca Institute of Teacher Education, students are admitted through merit, and 50% of each optional subject is earmarked by the government. The rest of the seats are as well availed of by the management, depending on merit from among the applicants for the management seats. This helps prevent favouritism or bias in the selection of candidates and helps to keep the right quality of admission of students.
