Shri Satya Sai Institute of Home Science for Women, Dharwad, was established in the year 1994 and is one of the premier women’s universities in Karnataka. The institution is affiliated with Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women's University, Vijayapura. This affiliated college situated in the learning centre of Dharwad has been incubating young talents for nearly three decades. The institute is, however, unique and possibly compact, with a total student enrolment of 56 and faculty members of up to 16. Specialising in home science and computer applications, the college provides three full-time undergraduate programmes: Home science and bachelor in computer applications, also known as BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications).
Shri Satya Sai Institute of Home Science for Women also has a set of amenities that are meant to improve the learning environment and situation of the students. A good number of books in the library depend on the type of knowledge delivered, and there are specialised and departmental laboratories for practical knowledge delivery. The college’s auditorium is used for various functions and seminars, adding to the academic culture of the college.
In case one has more affinity for games, the institute facilitates a proactive measure in the provision of amateur exercise to counterbalance academic scholarship. A girls’ hostel ensures out-station students have a safe and comfortable place to stay; hence, it is like their second home. This school also has a canteen, an IT block, and a health centre which has first aid, among other facilities necessary for aiding the learning process.
In Shri Satya Sai Institute of Home Science for Women, the programmes are designed to cater to the needed competencies in the current economy but retain the very core of tradition. Currently, the institute has three courses of study. Aside from the technical skills on nutrition, textiles, and family resource management taught by the B.Sc. Home Science, the programme also covers necessary skills in managing a home appropriately; on the other hand, the programme of BCA takes the students to the ever-changing world of information technology. As for the subject content, both courses will combine theoretical learning and practical skills in order to equip all graduates for further employment and/ormore study.
