Established in 1948, State Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Lucknow is one of the premier institutions in the country in the Ayurveda education and health care. The institution offers 11 full-time courses with the flag course as BAMS with an intake of 75 students. The college, at a postgraduate level, has numerous MD courses; each of these courses has specified intake capacities, such as Kayachikitsa, Dravyaguna Vigyan, and Prasuti. Then, there is a Ph.D. course in Ayurveda for those interested in advanced research into the subject. 

At State Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Lucknow, there is a national entrance exam. Normally, students are admitted to the BAMS program based on their performance in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Students at the postgraduate level for the MD programs are admitted via the All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Test (AIAPGET). This set of standardized tests at the entrance level helps in admitting students who have a strong base in basic sciences and an aptitude for Ayurvedic studies at the undergraduate level.
