The Dr. VN Bedekar Institute of Management Studies (VNBIMS) in the city of Thane, right next to Mumbai. It was established in the year 1973, and sits on thirteen acres on land, adjoining the Parsik Hills in the state of Maharashtra. The VNBIMS was initially known as the Department of Management Studies. It is now affiliated to the Mumbai University. This affiliation ensures approval from the UGC (University Grants Commission). The courses have also met the approval of the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). In addition, the institute is among those select few that few received ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certification.
The Vidya Prasarak Mandal (VPM) is the society that is behind the setting up of this institute. It is also based in Thane, and was formed long back, in 1935. Several educational institutions are run by this group, right from the kindergarten till higher education levels. Programmes are run in both English and Marathi medium. Programmes run include in Arts, Commerce, Science, Law, Management, Education, Engineering & Technology and even Vocational Studies via a Polytechnic. The VPM has also signed several pacts with foreign institutions towards mutual research, consulting and academic collaboration. Some of the key partners in this endeavour are the Northern College in Ontario, Canada and with the Skovde University in Sweden.
At the Dr. VN Bedekar Institute of Management Studies, courses are run primarily at the master’s level. The college is also singularly focused towards management education. One of these courses is the MMS (Masters in Management Studies), which is offered from the Mumbai University, so is UGC certified. The other is the autonomous PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management), which is approved by the AICTE. Both these are two- year full- time programmes. In addition, there are some diplomas and certifications as well on offer here. These are primarily meant for working professionals, seeking a skill upgrade. They may be taken up by the enrolled students as add- on courses, or by some external ones as well. One of these courses is the one- year Executive MBA. This may be undertaken both in General Management, as well as in the Pharmaceutical specialization.
There are certificate programmes here for the areas of- Retail Management, Banking & Insurance, Tax Management, Supply Chain & Logistics and Foreign Trade. They can also be pursued towards foreign language courses in German, French, Japanese, German and Chinese. Research is another key part of the Thane- based Dr. VN Bedekar Institute of Management Studies. Several of the faculty members have got their works published on respected national or international level peer- reviewed research journals. Some of those platforms they’ve been published on includes the likes of- SAARJ, SIESCOMS, SRUJAN, SIFICO, IJRIM (International Journal of Research in IT and Management), Global Journal for Research Analysis, International Journal of Financial Management, IJMDS (International Journal of Management and Development Studies), CENTUM and the Scholarly Research Journal of Studies.
The institute has also taken up memberships of several professional bodies. This helps students and the faculty collate research, as well as to source consulting assignments or internships. Some of these bodies on board include- AIMS (Association of Indian Management Schools), AIRC (American Information Resource Centre), BMA (Bombay Management Association), BCCI (Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and the MCCI (Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce and Industry). Several seminars and workshops are also held on campus. Industrial visits are organized for the students’ benefit. Another area of much importance to the institute is entrepreneurship. This is why the E- Genesis has been set up here. It is akin to the entrepreneurship development cells set up elsewhere. It helps develop the budding entrepreneurs among the students for the institute. Experienced trainers and entrepreneurs are invited to campus to deliver guest lectures and interact with those who have such business models. The VNBIMS is a signatory to the NEN (National Entrepreneurship Network) and the NEC (National Entrepreneurship Colloquy).
The campus has much to offer. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
All this and more has led to healthy campus placements for years now. Some of the key recruiters in recent seasons have been the likes of- DHL, Capgemini, Syntel, Lodha, Nomura, Goldman Sachs, VIP, Godrej, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank, ITC Hotels, Datamatics, ICICI Prudential, Reliance Money, India Bulls, Travel Seva and Spark Logistics, besides others.
