What is Power Electronics

Power electronics can be defined as a subject of electrical engineering. It has seen many accomplishments in recent times and has affected human life in a good way. It paves the way for a new kind of industrial revolution to play a significant role in energy conversion, renewable energy systems, storage, electric and hybrid vehicles. Power electronics is essential for our environment as it uses cheap resources.

Automation and high-efficiency systems both owe their existence to power electronics. Power electronics is used in switching power supplies, power converters/inverters, motor drives and soft motor starters. It is expected that shortly there will be a massive rise in demand for battery-powered devices and energy-efficient devices.

Therefore, power electronics graduates would be needed in huge numbers. This growth in employment in the power sector is predicted to happen from 2020-2025. Power electronic engineers work to minimize energy losses and aim at a sustainable future.

Careers in Power Electronics

Due to the increasing power demand, there's a considerable increase in jobs for power electronics engineers. This rapid growth has paved the way for countless job opportunities. For freshers in power electronics jobs like designing, testing and commissioning are allotted. The salary is typically medium for new engineers.

High pay demands good experience and exceptional skills. A precise understanding of the behaviour of magnetic, power FETS, IGBTS, is the hint to design and debug power circuits. This is important and should be possessed by power electronics aspirants. On the job training and practical knowledge should be gained to obtain careers with a good salary package.

Jobs that offer the highest salary for electronics engineers are staff electronics engineer, electronics field engineer and senior electronics engineers/technicians. These kinds of engineers must also be aware of EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) standards and know the specifications of the electrical network.

Being experienced in an embedded environment like aeronautics, military, or space is an advantage. Electronic engineers are expected to work on a wide range of projects from various sectors. Importantly, for the defence and aerospace sectors positions require a security clearance.
