What is Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering focuses on the ships and the structures of ships which are on land. It makes equipment and techniques which help in exploring the ocean floor and the resources which are hidden there. The impact of these resources on the environment is also studied.


The course, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is a mixture of some types of engineering like it is a mixture of mechanical, electrical, civil and chemical engineering. The skills exhibited by the graduates of this course should have very good organisational and interpersonal skills along with multi-tasking power.

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

The criteria for admission vary from college to college. But generally, the following criteria is required for admission into Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering: 

  • Students should have 50% minimum aggregate marks in subjects of Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.

  • Students should also qualify the entrance exams that are conducted.

The entrance exams help in testing the students’ aptitude and logical reasoning. Some of the exams that allow admission to the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering course, are –


  • JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination Main)- It is a national level entrance exam that gives admission to IIITs, NITs and regional colleges. The entrance exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) twice a year in online mode. 

  • JEE Advanced (Joint Entrance Examination Advanced)- This gives admission to UG engineering courses in IITs and other premier institutes across India. The student appearing for it should have a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology in 10+2 courses. Along with this, candidates must qualify JEE Main.

  • IMU CET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test)- It is a national level exam for UG, PG courses. The students should have 60% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. It is an online exam.

Job Description

Port Manager

They have to keep a check on the ports in order to optimise the resources used, reduce the costs and quality should be maintained. They look at the planning of it, how it was administered and reviewing the processes that were carried out. They also make sure that all the safety measures are taken, and the health of an individual is maintained. They also advise the people on how to handle the dangerous goods that are being equipped.

Chief Marine Engineer

They are the head of the ship in the department of technical duties. They keep a check on the technical room working, to see that if it is working properly or not. All other machinery and equipment in the ship should be working properly in order to support the smooth navigation of the ship. They also set down a set of orders for his members in the team.

Technical Superintendent

They have to track the movement of vessels in the ship. They also have to see all the operations in regard to the vessel and also ensure the condition of the vessel is proper. They have to check the technical, as well as operational issues, are being handled correctly. They also have to manage and hire staff for the ship and accordingly give them a little training. They have to make the budget and monitor it.

Marine Surveyor

They conduct surveys of the ship; this survey includes all the information relating to the ship. Before conducting the survey, they should have proper knowledge about the ship and its working. They also ensure if the machinery and equipment work well. Under the emergency condition, the safety equipment work is also checked by them. When tests are performed in the ship, the surveyor should be present and should analyse the reports if they fall in the standards mentioned or not.

Ship Operator

They see the day-to-day activities in the ship and if they are according to the standard procedures. They also monitor the movement of the vessel and cargo transfer operations. They understand the charter policy and cargo intake policies.

Second Marine Engineer

They have to maintain and update the documents every now and then. Documents such as daily record book, machinery maintenance record book, lube oil and chemical inventory, FFA and LSA record book etc. They have to ensure the engine room if working smoothly and efficiently.
