What is Engineering Design

Engineering Design is a method by which the engineers analyze and solve problems. The problems are described and mapped out in many ways and all the descriptions have common allotments. Therefore, engineering design is a process and it is a powerful approach to problem-solving and it is flexible enough to work in any situation.

There are many colleges in India wherein the candidate can pursue this course. And once the candidate completes their degree, they can get the opportunity to work abroad. Engineering Design is a four-year-long degree course where the candidate can learn about mechanical engineering systems, computer-aided design, and modelling among various other topics.

This course aims at making candidates well equipped with the creative application of the designing. It is important to study the course which helps the candidate in understanding the process of designing which includes objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, and construction among others.

Therefore, the most important purpose of engineering design is to make the candidates apply scientific knowledge as a solution to technical problems. The Engineering Design course can be studied for 4 years as a graduate program and then 2 years for the Masters.

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Engineering Design

Every college has certain eligibility criteria which the candidate needs to qualify for getting into their favourite college. And these are the eligibility criteria for undergraduate and graduate courses:

For Undergraduate

  • The candidate should have completed their 10+2 from a well-recognized board.

  • They should have taken up science as a stream (physics, chemistry and maths) and scored at least 60% in their last qualifying exams.

  • Apart from that, they have to qualify the entrance tests conducted by the college/university or at a national or state level similar to JEE main and BITSAT. 


For Postgraduate 

  • The candidate should have a degree in B.E or B.Tech from a well-recognized university/ college.

  • They should have scored at least 60% in their last qualifying exams.

  • Also, the candidate has to qualify certain entrance exams like GATE based on the college requirements.


Engineering design Entrance exams

To get admission in the preferred college, the candidate has to qualify certain entrance exams conducted by the college/university at the national or state level. Engineering Design course has certain national/state level and college level entrance exams for both graduate and postgraduate level students. They are as follows:

For UG

  • JEE Main – the JEE main exam is conducted twice every year for aspiring candidates who wish to pursue the undergraduate courses in B.Tech, B.Arch. and B.Plan. in prestigious colleges like NITs, IITs and SFIs.

  • BITSAT – BITSAT or Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test is conducted every year for candidates who wish to pursue the undergraduate programs in any of the three BITS campuses in Pilani, Hyderabad and Goa.

  • COMEDK – Consortium Medical, Engineering and Dental Entrance Examination is conducted every year for candidates who wish to pursue undergraduate courses in engineering and medicine. 


For PG

GATE – Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE is an entrance exam conducted every year for candidates who wish to pursue post graduation in engineering and science subjects.
