Structural Engineering course is a sub-discipline of civil engineering. The structural engineering professionals design the main integral part of the structures which are man-made. They need to keep in mind the stability, strength and rigidity of these structures. The designs made by them are then integrated with the architects and service engineer to build an amazing building out of it. The structural engineering students are also involved in the design of machinery, medical equipment and the vehicles which would have the structural integrity which would affect the functioning and safety of these structures.
Structural engineering involves the theories of physical laws and the empirical knowledge gained by applying different materials and geometries. They design complex structural buildings by using simple structural concepts. They make building very creative and efficient by using the least amount of funds, elements and materials.

Designing new buildings is the new trend, making them more attractive to tourists. They play a key role in the pre-disaster and the post-disaster of the building. It would include how to assess and refit the structure to have the same attractiveness as before. They have to look into the consideration of the entire building. It gives opportunities to balance work life and personal life. Have an overall growth in society with improving personal skills. Structural Engineering graduates can join the public sector, multinational companies or construction companies or even have a freelance job for their career. They also have to monitor the construction sites, see the requirements and the possibility of natural calamities to hit that place.

Subjects taught during the Structural Engineering course would reflect their performance on site. Each subject teaches a new form to the students. Some of the subjects taught are mentioned below –
Computer-Aided Design of Structures
Computer Analysis of Structures
Storage and Industrial Structures
Analysis and Design of Sandwich Panels
Design of Earthquake Resistant Structures
Design of Machine Foundation
Prestressed Concrete Structures
Forensic Civil Engineering
Structural engineering professionals design the buildings, pipelines, bridges etc. Their framework is taken into account by them. They also have a look into the strength, reliability and if these structures can handle their own weight and also resist any natural calamity. They not only look into the safety of the public while they use these structures but also look into the prospects of aesthetics and cost-efficiency. Structural engineering professionals specialise in the structures they draw, and their variety varies from nuclear power plants to hotels.
Some of the trending trends in Structural Engineering field are –
Funding and processes – Since there is an ever-growing demand in the making of new structures. New processes would help in improving the overheads and make jobs available to people.
Going Green – As technology improves, the environment is most affected. Therefore new techniques should be developed in such a way that it improves the environment by reducing energy consumption.
Zero waste practices – It is the new way of reducing waste generated by the industries. The benefit would be to expand in the future and the wider sections of society.
Sustainable Materials – use those materials which are sustainable. They build safely, and one example would be of the seismic activity in the areas which are prone to earthquakes.
Modular Construction – Modular ways of constructing help to build quickly without any loss of integrity and safety.
Each structural engineering professional has a different job in his mind. He/she wishes to get a job of his/her dreams. Some of the job profiles are mentioned below –
Job Profile | Job Description |
Planning Engineer | They make the most cost-efficient construction for the projects. They develop and complete these projects on time mentioned. They look into the matters of costs, the performance of the crew people, safety is maintained at all times and health of the crew. They may also sometimes make presentations containing the data and its interpretations. |
Assistant Engineer | They work on many engineering projects, and these are always reported to the Senior Engineers. They are employed in various sites like civil, chemical, electrical or manufacturing fields. Their job also varies from designing, developing, and evaluating the processes and the products. Provide assistance to the staff whenever they need help. |
