The CAT DILR Graph topic tests a candidate’s ability to read, interpret and analyse data presented visually. Graph-based sets can include bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts and combination graphs, with questions based on percentages, ratios, averages, comparisons and trends. For CAT 2026, the exam is scheduled to be conducted on November 29, 2026. As the DILR section requires candidates to make quick decisions from complex data, understanding graphs and identifying useful information can help improve both accuracy and time management.

CAT DILR Graph: Concepts, Types, Sample Questions and Preparation Tips 2026

This article covers the key CAT DILR concepts, sample questions and practical preparation tips for solving CAT DILR graph-based sets.

What is a Graph in CAT DILR?

A graph in CAT DILR is a visual representation of numerical data used to test a candidate’s ability to extract, compare and interpret information. Graphs may present data through bars, lines, points or sectors, with values plotted against defined categories or intervals. In a typical CAT DILR set, you may need to read the x-axis and y-axis, identify the scale, compare data points, calculate ratios, percentages, averages or differences, and combine information from multiple graphs.

Types of Graphs Asked in CAT DILR

CAT DILR graph-based sets can present data in different visual formats, and each format requires a slightly different interpretation approach. Candidates should be comfortable identifying the scale, extracting values and comparing multiple data points before attempting calculations.

    Bar Graph

Bar graphs represent quantities using bars of different lengths or heights. CAT questions may use single, double or multiple bar graphs to compare categories across years, groups or variables. Questions commonly involve totals, differences, ratios and percentage changes.

    1790837718191

    Line Graph

Line graphs show how a variable changes across an ordered scale, usually time. They are useful for analysing growth, decline, fluctuations and trends. Questions can require comparison between years, calculating changes or identifying periods with specific conditions.

    1790837718231

    Pie Chart

A pie chart divides a whole into sectors representing proportions or percentages. CAT questions may require converting sector percentages into actual quantities, comparing categories, finding ratios or determining missing values.

    1790837718272

    Mixed Graphs

Some DILR sets combine two or more forms of data, such as a bar graph with a table or a line graph with a pie chart. These sets require information from different representations to be connected before reaching the answer.

    1790837718315

Important Concepts for CAT DILR Graph Questions

Graph-based DILR questions do not usually require advanced mathematics. The challenge is to read the visual data accurately, identify relationships and apply basic arithmetic without wasting time. Candidates should be comfortable with the following concepts.

    Reading Scales and Axes

The x-axis generally represents categories, years or other independent variables, while the y-axis shows the corresponding numerical values. Always check the scale before reading a value. For example, if the y-axis moves from 0 to 100 in intervals of 20, a bar halfway between 40 and 60 represents 50, not 10 or 20. In mixed graphs, also check whether different graphs use different units or scales.

    Percentage Change

Percentage change is frequently used to compare values shown in graphs.

Percentage Change = [(New Value − Original Value) / Original Value] × 100

For example, if sales increase from 240 to 300:

    Percentage increase = (60/240) × 100 = 25%

A common CAT trap is using the new value instead of the original value as the denominator.

    Ratio and Proportion

Ratio questions require candidates to compare two quantities in their simplest form.

For example, if two categories have values of 180 and 240:

    Ratio = 180 : 240 = 3 : 4

In a pie chart or mixed graph, ratios may need to be derived from percentages, totals or values obtained from another data source.

    Averages

Graphs may provide data for multiple years, categories or groups and ask for their average.

Average = Sum of all relevant values / Number of values

The key is to include only the observations specified in the question. For example, if the question asks for the average production between 2021 and 2023, values from 2020 should not be included.

    Absolute Difference

Absolute difference simply measures the gap between two values:

    Absolute Difference = |Value 1 − Value 2|

If production is 450 units for A and 320 units for B, the difference is 130 units. This is different from percentage difference or percentage change.

    Percentage Points

When comparing percentages, distinguish between percentage points and percentage change. If a company's market share rises from 20% to 30%, the increase is 10 percentage points, whereas the percentage increase is:

    (10/20) × 100 = 50%

This distinction can be important in CAT DILR options.

    Weighted Average

When different categories have different quantities or weights, a simple average may give the wrong result. Use:

    Weighted Average = Σ(Value × Weight) / Σ Weight

This becomes particularly relevant when a graph provides production, sales, prices or performance data alongside another variable.

    Approximation

Not every calculation needs to be exact. When answer options are sufficiently far apart, approximation can reduce calculation time. However, candidates should avoid approximation when options are close or when the question asks for an exact ratio or value.

    Comparing Trends

In line graphs, focus on the direction and magnitude of change rather than simply identifying the highest point. A graph may show an overall increase while containing one or more periods of decline. Questions can ask about consecutive growth, maximum increase, minimum decrease or a specific change over a period.

Common Types of CAT DILR Graph Questions

CAT DILR graph questions can test anything from direct data extraction to multi-step calculations involving more than one graph. The question may ask you to identify a value, compare categories, calculate a percentage or derive information that is not directly given. Common question patterns include:

    Finding Values

Questions may ask for the value represented by a particular bar, point, sector or category. These are usually based on correctly reading the axis, scale, units and labels.

    Finding Totals

You may need to add values across different categories, years or groups. In some sets, the total is not directly provided and must be calculated from the graph.

    Comparing Categories

These questions ask you to compare two or more data points using difference, ratio or percentage. The categories may belong to the same year or different periods.

    Percentage Change

A graph may show values across different years and ask for the percentage increase or decrease between two specified points. The original value must be used as the denominator.

    Ratio-Based Questions

Candidates may be asked to determine the ratio between two categories or compare values represented in different parts of a graph.

    Average-Based Questions

These questions require calculating the average of selected values from the graph. They may involve yearly data, multiple categories or values from more than one dataset.

    Missing Value Questions

A graph may provide partial information along with a total, ratio or percentage. You must use the given relationship to calculate the missing value.

    Trend-Based Questions

Common in line graphs, these questions ask you to identify periods of increase, decrease, maximum growth, minimum growth or fluctuation.

    Data Combination Questions

These are more calculation-intensive questions in which information from a bar graph, line graph, table or pie chart must be combined. The required value may not be available directly in any single representation.

    Statement-Based Questions

You may be given several statements and asked to determine which statements are correct, incorrect or cannot be determined from the graph. These questions test whether you can distinguish between what the data establishes and what it does not.
