It depends on various factors, both universities are very good. If there is a money problem go for AMU, if you want CSE then go for Thapar otherwise AMU is a better option. Aligarh Muslim University is a Central University. Its ranking is higher than any private university.

sorry to say aligarh muslim  university has no lateral entry scheme for diploma students to get admission in b.tech course. but diploma students can do b.e in evening course which is same a btech course, however evening course has 3 branches only,
