About College

The Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (YSP UHF) is located in the state of Himachal Pradesh (HP). To be precise, it is in the town of Nauni, part of the Solan district. The college is named after Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, who was the first ever Chief Minister of HP. He was also a noted educationist in his time, himself having earned his doctorate from the Lucknow University, even before independence. The history of this university too is extremely rich. While the YSP UHF in its present- day avatar was only begun in 1985, the history goes back much further.

Back in 1962, the Himachal Agriculture College (HAC) was established in Solan, then affiliated to the Panjab University (PU). After the creation of the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in 1970, the HAC was made one of the campuses of the new entity, catering to agricultural science. By 1985, the college got upgraded to the status of a state university, and named after the state’s erstwhile chief minister. Being a state university, the UGC (University Grants Commission) approval has been met. The university has three constituent units as part of it. Two of them are located in the town of Nauni itself.

These are the College of Horticulture and the College of Forestry. The third one is the College of Horticulture and Forestry, located in the town of Neri, part of the Hamirpur district. Another College of Horticulture has been planned for the district of Mandi, in the town of Thunag. The main campus of the YSP UHF offers several courses right from the UG till doctoral levels. At the under- grad level, the BSc. (H) course is available in the areas of Forestry and in Horticulture. Both of these are four- year sources. At the master’s level, options abound for both an MSc. and an MBA.

The MSc. may be undertaken in nine different areas as provided by the College of Horticulture. These are for the areas of- Fruit Science, Entomology, Vegetable Science, Plant Pathology, Food Technology, Seed Science & Technology, Molecular Biology & Bio Technology and for Floriculture & Landscape Architecture. Yet another one is the MSc. in Spices, Plantation and Medicinal & Aromatic Plants. The College of Forestry provides another set of such MSc., twelve of them to be precise. These are for- Agroforestry, Environment Management, Watershed Management, Silviculture, Soil Science, Wood Science & Technology, Statistics, Environmental Science, Agricultural Economics, Microbiology, Forest Genetic Resources and for Medicinal & Aromatic Plants.

MBA programmes may be taken under two modes. One is the conventional one with specializations in Marketing, Finance or Human Resources. Another is the MBA in Agri- Business Management. The main fields within the latter kind of an MBA here, are Agricultural Marketing and Farm Business Management. Some doctoral programmes too can be taken up from either of these two major colleges. These are all heavily research and field- driven. The Himalayan location of the campus helps massively, as most of the resources are naturally thriving. Some other unique courses are on offer at the other campuses in Thunag and in Neri, also in HP.

Further, there is the one- year Diploma in Fruits, Vegetable Processing and Bakery Products. This is an industry- oriented programme, typically taken up by professionals working in this area, and seeking a skill upgrade. The Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry also runs several research units in other parts of the state. These are known as the Regional Horticulture Research Stations (RHRS). Some of these have been in existence for longer than the university itself, but later got incorporated under the YSP UHF. These RHRSs are located in the towns of Mashobra, Bajaura, Sharbo, Jachh and in Dhaula Kuan, all in HP.

Online learning is another methodology that the college strongly endorses. That is why the college is a signatory the SWAYAM initiative of the Government of India. It is a part the National Academic Depository (NAD) which stores high- quality academic content for future usage. This collates information from across sources within the country’s academic and research circles. The university has also been proactive enough to open the Vidya Lakshmi portal. This portal helps students get facilitated to timely study loans. The portal is aligned to the Indian Banks Association (IBA). Several training sessions and workshops are also held on campus.

One of the critical aims of these is to facilitate the training for government official in Himachal Pradesh. Alternative and eco- friendly approaches towards Agri- business are accorded the top status. Another is to fight the menace of plant diseases. The constituent colleges also assist the students with campus recruitments. All this and more has led to the university, accruing high ranks across, the platforms. The NIRF (National Institutional Research Framework) powered by the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) has placed the YSP UHF at rank 71st all India, among the universities. This has further corresponded to the 101- 150 rank band overall.

The faculty is well qualified providing good quality education and is national level renowned institute for horticulture and forestry with good infrastructure through opportunities and placements after BSc are limited but plenty in MBA and masters. A great platform for research studies and post graduation and a number of activities throughout the semester including sports, scholastic and cultural activities. Being a government institute, the fee and fund is affordable with provision of hostel for all the students. The academic semester is smartly divided with tours and seminars in the final year. Hence, all in all a great university to be a part of to make a career in horticulture and forestry. A chaos free campus and completely safe and lagging fee and spread over a large area having well maintained horticulture and forestry fields providing a great area for research purposes.
