The Bankura Sammilani Medical College (BSMC) is located the state of West Bengal. As the name suggests, it is found in the district by the name of Bankura. It was established back in the year 1922, but then it was known as the Bankura Sammilani Medical School and Hospital. The term college got attached only in 1956. It is run by the Bankura Sammilani Trust. The courses here are recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI). It was earlier affiliated to the Calcutta University. Now it is attached to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. This was after the takeover of the college by the Government of West Bengal in the year 1961. The BMSC has two campuses, one each in the towns of Lokepur and Gobindanagar.
Courses are available here at both the UG as well as PG levels. The MBBS is of course the flagship programme at the undergrad level. Admissions to these programmes is via the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) or through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Another programme at this level is the BSc. in Nursing. Options about at the Masters level. MD programmes may be pursued in the areas of – General Medicine, Pathology, Community Medicine, General Surgery, Anatomy, Orthopaedics, Anaesthesiology, OBS & Gynaecology, Physiology, Radiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Dermatology and in Pharmacology. Selection is via the NEET PG or through the Kolkata PGMEE. Several Para- medical courses may also be undertaken here. These are primarily meant for working professionals.
One of the biggest advantages of the BSMC is the fact that it is attached right next to a working hospital. This means that students get exposure in working on real- life problems. They can observe from close quarters, the top practitioners among doctors, surgeons, pharmacists, nurses and administrators. A Citizens Charter has been framed here at the Bankura Sammilani Medical College. This is a commitment to work for the better of society. An emergency blood bank is maintained in the hospital. Emergency features are also forever kept on. The college also runs the Swasthya Samiti which is a foundation that engages with the local community. Within this is the Rogi Kalyan Samiti.
Several diplomas may also be pursued here, mainly by working professionals. These are available for the areas of- GNM, Medicinal Lab Technology, Radiography Diagnostic, Dialysis Technology, Radiological Technology, Critical Care Technology, Operation Theatre Technology, Optometry, Physiotherapy, and in Electro- cardio graphic Technique. These all range between two to three years, with only limited seats available. A Students’ Union also exists on campus to take care of all student welfare as well as grievance related affairs. It also organizes different events for the students and the staff.
The entire academics as well as the medical practices are run by a cohort of departments. These departments may also further be categorized as Pre- Clinical, Para- Clinical, Clinical and for Other Specialties. Within the Pre- clinical category, there are departments for Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology. Under Para- Clinical, there is Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Community Medicine, and Forensic & State Medicine. The Clinical category is the biggest comprising of the maximum number of such departments. They may be named as – General Medicine, Dermatology, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Dentistry, Orthopaedics, ENT, Paediatrics, Anaesthesiology and OBS & Gynaecology.
There are Other Specialties here as well. They are for the fields of – Urology, Physical Medicine, Cariology, Neurology and for Radiotherapy & Oncology. As research is such an important part here, the there is also a Central Research Unit here. This research focus has yielded extremely good rankings for the institute. It has been placed as the 53rd best in the country among medical colleges by the Careers 360 magazine.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. In total there are seven hostels here, with two of them meant for girls and the others for the boys. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The college even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. A convenience store is also located within campus. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. It is at the Nutan Bhavan Building. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
