The Bharati Vidyapeeth (BVP) runs a group of institutions spread in different cities, and spanning a diverse range of academic areas. The first campus was begun in the city of Pune, in Maharashtra state. This was back in 1964, started by the renowned academician Shri Patangrao Kadam. Since then, the group has expanded to add more campuses in Pune itself, plus others in different parts of Maharashtra in the cities of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Kolhapur, Sangli, Karad, Panchganj and in Satara. There is also a campus in New Delhi. And there is an international campus in Dubai, which is in the UAE (United Arab Emirates). The year 1996 saw the Bharati Vidyapeeth being recognized as a Deemed University by the UGC (University Grants Commission).
At present, the group trains students for courses on – Agriculture, Medicine, Dentistry, Ayurveda, Nursing, Engineering, Pharmacy, Management, Environment Science, Catering Technology, Homeopathy and Hotel Management, besides a few more areas. This equals a total of seventy- eight schools and sixty institutes dealing with higher educations. A few of these are also into professional courses. Some schools at the K- 12 level are also operated by the group in Maharashtra.
The Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Medical College (BVDUMC) was established in the year 1989. It sits on seventy- three acres of land in Pune. The courses here have been recognized by the MCI (Medical Council of India). The BVDUMC has been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in it. There are courses here, for both the UG as well as PG levels. At the UG level, of course, the main course is the MBBS, which is the essential qualification to all aspiring doctors.
There are a far greater number of options at the master’s level. The courses now available include the MD in the areas of- General Medicine, Pathology, Pulmonary Medicine, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Anatomy, Paediatrics, Radio diagnosis, Anaesthesia, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology, Community Medicine and for Emergency Medicine. There are also MS programmes available for the areas of- General Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics and for Obstetrics & Gynaecology. One of the biggest advantages for aspiring medical and healthcare professionals to enrol at the BVDUMC is that the Bharati Hospital is attached right next to the medical college. This allows the students to get hands- on experience observing, practitioners among doctors, nurses, surgeons and administrators.
Diplomas are also available in several of these areas. These are meant primarily for working professionals seeking a skill upgrade. These are available in a number of areas where a master’s degree may be pursued in here. Likewise, there too are the skill development certifications, in line with several national, as well as regional schemes. These certifications may be availed from the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Medical College for careers as- Technician, Operation Theatre Technician, Dialysis Technician and Anaesthesia Technician. Also, on offer is the Post Graduate Diploma in Infection Control. A DMLT (Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology) may also be taken up. It can even be pursued with specialization in MRI or for CT Scan Technical.
Fellowships may also be pursued, here at the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Medical College in Pune. These could be in either Pediatrics or in Medicine. Within the former, there are the options for- Neonatology, Critical Care, Epilepsy & Neurology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Infection Diseases, Behaviour & Development, Haemato- Oncology, NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) & for PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit). The last two may also be pursued on a dual mode. The Fellowships in Medicine may be pursued in the areas of- Rheumatology, Radiology, Adult Infections Disease and in Paediatric Radiology.
To further the research credentials of the institute, some Super- Speciality courses are on offer here. They may be undertaken for- Urology, Cardiology, Neonatology and for Critical Care Medicine. And to round it all up, there are even some MSc. programmes here at the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Medical College. These are for- Medical Anatomy, Medical Physiology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Biochemistry and in Medical Pharmacology. The entire academics is run by a set of departments. These may further be divided into Pre- Clinical, Para- Clinical, Clinical Major, Clinical Minor and Super- Specialty. The largest one is the Clinical Major Department.
Quite a few of the faculty members at the BVDUMC have been published on recognized academic journals. A number of research programmes have also been undertaken by the separate departments. While some of these research assignments have been self- funded, many have even received external help. Some of the top bodies that have assisted with funding and the research itself are the DST (Department of Science and Technology), ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research), SIIL (Syngene International India Limited), Sanofi Pasteur, GSK (Glaxo Smith Kline), INCLEN (International Clinical Epidemiology Network), Human Biologicals Institute, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Asahi Kasei Pharma America Corporation. The ICMR even considers the institute as a Centre of Excellence for Mother and Child Health and Eclampsia.
