The department is an institution for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Central University of Kashmir, Srinagar, where only a strict and merit-based selection process has been adopted for students in law studies. Being the first national law school to start, it offers its law education from the undergraduate to doctoral levels under the quality scrutiny of the Bar Council of India.
The entire Department of Law, School of Legal Studies, Central University of Kashmir admission process programmes takes place through Central Universities Common Entrance Test. The CUCET is now simply referred to as CUET or Common University Entrance Test. The test at the national level ensures that only the most deserving candidates gain admission. The CUET admits students based on undergraduate (CUET UG) and postgraduate (CUET PG) categories separately.

Both tests will be held online. The eligibility criteria at Department of Law, School of Legal Studies, Central University of Kashmir differ according to the course. For the undergraduate BA LLB course, the candidate must have passed 10+2 from a recognised board. For the LLM course, a bachelor's degree in law is required. Doctoral aspirants must have a master's degree in law or any other related field.

The flagship programme for the department has been the integrated five-year programme BA LLB. The course for the said programmes is taken from the CUET UG exams. As it has already attained the sanctioned student intake, students admitted under it is 60 students. However, only applicants with satisfactory grades in CUET UG examinations will be entitled to enter it.
Department of Law, School of Legal Studies, Central University of Kashmir admission to the two-year postgraduate LLM programme is done through CUET PG. This programme is offered to the law graduates with a desire to specialise in some fields of law or for the sake of pursuing academic careers. The exact number of seats might be different; the aspirants should refer to the official website for updated information.
One can also get admission through the CUET PG for doctoral law. There are vacancies along with eligible supervisors. This programme is best suited to those who aspire to contribute in legal research as well as academic. The minimum duration of Ph.D. course is six years.
