The Farook College is located in the city of Kozhikode, formerly known as Calicut. This city is one of the educational hubs of the state of Kerala. It is also famous as the site where the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first landed during his iconic trip to India, in the year 1498. The Farook College is itself one of the older colleges in the region, having been established back in 1948, immediately after the country’s independence. It is affiliated to the University of Calicut, which as the name suggests, is also based in Kozhikode. This affiliation, ensures the approval of the UGC (University Grants Commission).
The college campus is spread over a total area worth fifty- six acres of land. The Rouzathol Uloom Association was behind the setting up of this college. It was then led by Moulavi Abdussabah Ahmed Ali. The Kozhikode- based Farook College Farook College been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. The Ford Foundation in New York has bestowed upon this college the tag of Campus Diversity, for which a special grant has been awarded.
There is a huge diversity of courses available here, at both the UG as well as the PG levels. At the undergrad level, to start with, the B.A. is offered in the areas of Malayalam, English Language & Literature, Sociology, Economics, Arabic & Islamic History and for the unique field of Multimedia Communication. Similarly, at the master’s level, the MA is offered in Arabic, History, Economics and in English. The BSc. meanwhile may be taken up for the areas of- Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Psychology, Mathematics, Zoology, Computer Science and for Statistics. Similar programmes may also be taken up at the PG level for the MSc.
While commerce may be a relatively newer field introduced here, the Farook College, Kozhikode (FCK) has already made a name for itself in it. The B. Com and the M. Com may respectively be undertaken at the UG and master’s levels. These may even be taken up with the specializations in the areas of Computer Applications and in Finance. Several professional courses have also gotten added up in due course of time. For library professionals, UG as well PG programmes are available in the library sciences with B. Lib. I. Sc. and the M. Lib. I. Sc. For media professionals too, both levels provide courses.
These are the BMMC (Bachelor’s in Multi Media Communication) and the MCJ (Master’s in Communication and Journalism). The highly popular BBA option also exists. A lot of the courses mentioned here may be taken up under the self- supporting mode, while some are on offer under the aided programmes scheme. The entire academics here at the FCK is run by a cohort of nine academic departments, each with expertise in its own area. These are for the areas of- Languages, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Vocational, Physical Education, Communication & Media and also in Commerce & Management.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The college even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. A convenience store is also located within campus.
Research too forms a key component of the Farook College. For this purpose, the college releases its own publication, where all major research findings may get chronicled. This is called the Social Orbit. The college has also taken up several research assignments, as generated by government or industry bodies such as the UGC, DST (Department of Science and Technology) and the FIST (Fund for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure). The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes. Online learning is another methodology that the college strongly endorses.
That is why the ESEC has also signed up for the NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning). The college has always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students of this college have been active participants in government schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the NCC (National Cadet Corps). One of the unique initiatives taken here is to equip students with coaching classes for competitive exams. There is a separate PM Institute for Civil Services Examination where students are trained on topics which will help them crack entrance exams such as the UGC- NET and the UPSC. So, subjects such as General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Data Interpretation, Research Aptitude, Reasoning and ICT are coached here.
